Black Friday Best-Seller: Guns
Americans were big spenders on Black Friday–especially on guns.Numbers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation show an all-time one-day high for background check requests from gun buyers last Friday. There were 129,166 requests to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS)–a third more than the previous record of 97,848 on Black Friday 2008, FBI spokesman Stephen Fischer said. On Black Friday last year, there were 87,061 requests. That sound you hear? That's Sarah Brady being talked down off a ledge... Seems that while WEERD, SCI-FI, and I were visiting Wally doing our own Black Friday thing, gunnies all over America were out exercising their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. Brings a tear to your eye, it does. Of course, the Bradys just shrug it off:
But Caroline Brewer, a spokeswoman for the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, said the Black Friday sales surge “might say something about marketing” but didn’t reflect actual patterns in U.S. gun ownership.Right. Because I see ads on TV for Stag Arms and Mossberg. Dolt. Fact is, despite your most harried screeching, more and more people across the country are waking up and realizing several things: 1. Shooting is fun; 2. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away; 3. Shooting is fun; 4. When everything goes ugly, hokey religions are no match for a good blaster at your side; and 5. Shooting is fun.
Black Rifle Friday sure has a ring to it, doesn't it?
That is all.

A point I found interesting in another report on this subject is that the FBI announced these numbers voluntarily - nobody had to go ask them.
People accuse government agencies of trying to discourage gun ownership, but if the FBI was in on that I don't think they'd make an announcement like this.
Add to that those of us who live in states that do not need background checks if you have a CCW permit.
You can do that is MA can't you?

And add one more, since I initiated my paperwork for a Browning Buck Mark on Nov.23. I hate Black Friday crowds, especially at Bass Pro Shop. Their procedures are extremely cumbersome, even for gun buying in Maryland. Add to that a 90-minute wait just to see an associate, and you can see why I didn't wait 'til Friday.
Even with a CCW permit, purchase from a FFL requires a NCIS check, but in states with a waiting period, the waiting period may be waived. NCIS checks are not free, so they are not done frivolously. It is important to note that multiple weapons may be purchased on a single NCIS check, so the volume of weapons sold may be higher.
In Illinois, weapons possession requires a FOID card. Applications for FOID cards also spiked on Black Friday.
One purpose of the "voluntary" FBI announcement is to propagate the illusion that Obama "allowed" the sales to occur, contrary to opinions otherwise.
