Student arrested for burping, lawsuit claims
(CBS/AP) ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A 13-year-old was handcuffed and hauled off to a juvenile detention for burping in class, according to a civil rights lawsuit filed against an Albuquerque public school principal, a teacher and a city police officer.
The suit was filed Wednesday, the same day the district was also sued by the family of a 7-year-old autistic boy who was handcuffed to a chair.
Hmm. There's one other incident about this kid in the story, where he had $200 in his pocket that the school accused him of having for selling drugs - for which they strip-searched him, mind you. He has no other record, nor any indication of dangerousness. And yet, the police were called, he was hauled out of the building in handcuffs, and suspended for the remainder of the year.
For burping in gym class.
I'm going to take a wild guess here. This kid's a troublemaker, probably in the Private Joker mold. He's not a violent kid, just a class clown/disturbance generator/etc. and the school has had enough of his disruptions. They can't pin anything on him, and either he's too smart to get caught or he's just being a goofball. From the sounds of other issues, the school has a problem with students that don't go with the flow.
Let's hope their cash flows out the door with this lawsuit, because this idiocy has to stop.

Sure, lets take from the school district!! That helps!!
Fire the administration people who foster this kind of crap, that's what will solve the problem. If the kid is an issue, expel him, let mom and dad deal with him at home.
But the school district paying a big lawsuit? That's the wrong way to go about it.
Geez, why not just stuff him full of Ritalin like everybody else does with "problem" boys?
As an aside, I find it hilarious that Firefox recognized "Ritalin" (only if it's capitalized) and doesn't recognize "Obama".

Personally, I'm voting for #4. Although it's a damn shame that the arresting officer will be defended by the union, when he should be fired for cuffing a child.
