H. Allen Smith and Frank Tolbert made a pretty good 30 yr run with the beans/no beans thing. H. Allen was a d**n yankee, and as such was not allowed to have an opinion on chili. Tim nailed that sucker.
Honestly I'm with dave here. Though I must confess I don't think I've ever had chili without beans. (I'm in sweden, and the dish is known as chili con carne here, and rarely is it spiced hot either...) Regional odd note, the beans in question in sweden is typically canned baked beans in tomato sauce.
At my house, homemade chili has beans...and lots of them. And it is hot enough to melt your face off. I don't give a rat's ass if your chili doesn't have beans, or isn't hot. That's your business, and I'm not going to argue with you over that.
However, if you want to get the "damn yankees" cranked up, don't argue the chili side of things - get them going on what is "real" clam chowder. New England (real) or Manhattan (clam & tomato soup).

Open Invitation for New Shooters
Just want to extend an open invitation to all potential new shooters in the Northern Virginia area. If you have never shot a firearm, or would like to get back into the shooting sports, or are an accomplished shooter who'd like to try something in my arsenal, give me a shout.
New shooters get range time, targets, gun use and ammo on me. I've even got extra eye and ear protection - all you have to do is show up.

That is not chili. That is a spicy stew made with meat and beans. Chili has meat meat, spices and liquid. Anything else added makes it a stew.
YES!! CHILI HAS BEANS!
Colorado knows jack about chili, as evidenced by the fact that the stuff on those fries has beans.
Way to add insult to injury Jay...
WV: licks (Hell no.)
Agree with Tim :-)
Beans go with chili the same way rice goes with gumbo.
Separate, allowed to touch, but prepared and held separately.
That being said...
I have no problem serving chili with beans in or gumbo with rice in.
If people will buy it I will happily take their money.

Yeah, and Texas BBQ has beef. Go figure.
I guess I never really understood the fuss over the definition of chili. All I want to know is, "is it good?"

Judging by the raging gas that I've been inflicting upon everyone around me...chili has beans...
Meat, beans Chili powder (or roll yer own mix of chilis), salt and onion.
That is chili.

Why do you think the inventors of it are called BEANERS!
