Want to Make College Even More Meaningless?

D.C. Lawmakers Propose Requiring Students to Apply to College
Lawmakers in the nation's capital have floated a plan to require high school students to apply to college or trade school -- even if the students have no interest in attending.

The proposal is a bid to ensure students in the troubled Washington, D.C., school system at least have the know-how to navigate the admissions process.
Riiiight. Because nothing motivates a student to learn like being forced to do something. What's next? A bill requiring people out of work to get jobs? Or, more likely, a bill requiring businesses in the DC area to hire anyone that applies. It's just the logical extension of what this "lawmaker" has learned already: when the only tool you have is a gavel, every problem starts looking like a law that needs to be made...

Vote Democrat! It's easier than thinking!

That is all.

But think off all the jobs that would be created in college admissions offices, sorting through the chaff!

You just need to learn to appreciate the 'outside the box' thinking being displayed here!

So negative all the time...

I know greg is being facetious, but I doubt Our Heroic Lawmaker has even thought about the increased workload at the surrounding colleges. (Or if he has, I'm sure he realized that it wouldn't come out of DC's budget anyway, so not his problem. Same for the fees for the mandatory SAT and ACT testing.)

It's scary who can get elected to city council these days.

Last time I checked, there were costs associated with applying to college. Once again someone in Congress wants to force people to engage in commerce to which they might be opposed.

First it was buying health care, now it's applying to college.

I wonder what's next.

Too Old,

Suggest a mandate that every household in good standing be required to have an AR-pattern semi-auto assault rifle. This mandate would of course allow the citizen to defend against tyranny.

There's already a model for it . . . see the GA town of Kennesaw.

OK, then. It's a no-brainer: D.C. needs to fund free public schooling pre-k thru post-doc. Require everyone to attend. And require everyone pass every step of the way. This will solve Life, ipso facto.

When I first saw the story I thought it was a ploy to force students to apply for student loans.

I'm guessing loan applications have dropped since the govt took the student loan program away from the private sector and this would be a way to 'stimulate' student loans.

Before they make it mandatory that kids apply to college they should make it mandatory that kids learn to read, write and do basic math before they graduate.

So why don't they pass a Law requiring every eligible student to take the Military's ASVAB Test? They can be doing something a LOT more useful than spending 4 years sitting on their butts in Advanced Brainwashing Classes, plus they get a paycheck during that time.

Also, does this mean that D.C. also will implement a 100% Graduation Requirement, no matter how stupid the kid is? Can't get into 4 year schools w/o a Grad. Cert or a G.E.D., right?

Great.

Because 40% of the dumbasses I see each and every semester who don't want to be there and don't have the skills to be there aren't enough to put up with.

It's late and my mind is wandering in weird directions...

First Brad says:

I combined the two and came up with a lovely proposal for new legislation -- say, by a Democrat in a purplish district who's running scared:

Every household must have at least one firearm, provided free of charge by the government!

Combine guns with free handouts! There's something for everyone!

(Yeah, I know, there's all sorts of things wrong with this. For one, I wouldn't want to trust my life to a gun the government wanted me to have...)
