Encouraging Sign, But...

Fatal D.C. stabbing makes a case for handguns

Robert Leroy Wright, 37, was walking his dog Sunday morning in Southeast Washington when police say he was confronted by a knife-wielding neighbor about “allowing the dog near his yard.” A dispute ensued, and the neighbor, Ellsworth Colbert, 56, stabbed Wright to death, according to D.C. police.
Overall, it's a decent article - odd to see a pro-CCW article in the WA Post, of all places. I think Nancy was curious about my take on it, so here it is. I've seen this kicking around, and while it's heartening to see support coming from unexpected places, the article itself just doesn't ring right with me.

The author is projecting - he's just not projecting in the normal matters of the antis. He's proposing using the firearm to scare off potential attackers - which is a big problem in my book. He states:
According to police reports, Colbert comes out of his house with a knife in one hand and a stick in the other. Being alert to the approaching threat, an armed Wright would now have several options. He could pull his gun, say, a .40-caliber Glock semiautomatic, which speaks volumes without firing a shot: “Never bring a knife to a gunfight, pal.”
No. The option to employ in that scenario is to turn and walk away quickly without losing sight of the goblin. Call 911 IMMEDIATELY. If you have to, run like a frightened rabbit. The author recognizes this, but thinks that pulling out a gun would have been better?

He also says:
Say what you will about the perils of gun ownership, but nobody can doubt that Wright would be alive today if he’d had one.
First of all, what "perils of gun ownership"? The only peril I am in because I own firearms is that I will spend too much on a gun and the Mrs. gets upset. They are inanimate objects. They cannot hurt you on their own. There are no "perils" to owning a firearm as long as you obey the four rules and take basic precautions to secure your arms from theft or other unauthorized access.

And secondly, Wright died because he was stupid - even after being slashed, he went back and confronted the guy with the knife. He should have called 911 at the get-go, so police would have been on their way already, and he would have been on the line with 911 when he was slashed, so the ambulance would also be on the way. Had he gone back to confront the guy and shot him dead, he'd be arrested for and tried for murder charges.

It's interesting to see the tide turning, but disinformation and ignorance that's marginally on our side is still disinformation and ignorance...

That is all.

Firearms are not Magic Wands.

The WaPost columnist actually uses the column to attack knife ownership, talking of a service station "that sells assault knives for about $10," and describes another knife thus: a spring-loaded Army-style tactical knife with a nasty, three-inch serrated blade curved like a raptor’s claw.

So the writer's hoplophobia is still there, it's just pointed in a different direction. He must figure that he can't beat the established gun lobby, so he'll focus instead on the infant knife lobby.

"Spring-loaded" so that it can be opened with one hand or with less effort, like the physically handicapped or elderly find useful.
"Army-style tactical knife" like a Swiss Army knife? Beware of those Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts!

"Serrated blade" like that found in a kitchen knife good for cutting tomatoes or unsliced bread?

"Curved like a raptor's claw" like a linoleum knife?

Ferfal had several things to say about knives and guns. For one, most folk believe that fallacy about "bringing a knife to a gunfight". Problem is, if the person has a knife within 21 (or more) feet, that distance can be closed before Joe Schmo can clear leather. And most folk won't threaten you with their knife at 21 feet, they're already at bad breath distance...and if you haven't avoided, or put hand on blaster by then, you may be in some trouble.

Assault knives? A 3" blade is an assault knife now? Not saying a ten dollar "saturday night special" blade couldn't be useful or get someone to room temperature...but I've not seen too many assault knives.

Now if it was a Kukri or something, I could almost buy the assault knife sticker... almost. Especially if it was in the hand of a Ghurka.

But yeah, the dead guy kinda darwined himself.

The news networks here are reporting that the man was stabbed because he didn't curb his dog and pick up the waste. So essentially, killed over sh*t.

Sad. I would like to think common courtesy from all involved is the best solution to this, and not a gun.
