File Under "I"

"I" for "If It Were You Or I"... Brad_in_MA sends in this rather disturbing story out of CT:

2 New Haven officers injured after firearm accidentally discharges at police academy

NEW HAVEN — Two police officers suffered minor injuries from shrapnel after a training officer at the police academy accidentally fired his weapon in a classroom.

The mishap occurred at 710 Sherman Parkway, the department main training academy, shortly after noon. Police spokesman Dave Hartman said a group of officers was attending in-service training and, as the class prepared for a break, an officer approached one of the trainers with a question.
Apparently the "trainer" decided to answer the trainee's question by using a loaded firearm as example. And left his booger hook on the bang switch while doing it. About the only thing this "professional" did right was to have the gun pointed in a safe direction - when it discharged (as guns will do when you have a loaded gun and your booger hook on the bang switch), it was pointed at a concrete wall.

Now, had this been you or I showing our buddies the (in)correct way to do [X] with a handgun, there's a pretty good chance we'd be facing charges of some sort. At the very least some form of discharging a firearm in city limits or thereabouts; reckless endangerment possibly; there would be consequences to a screw-up of this magnitude. But since they're Only Ones, it's all fine and dandy.

I just hope this "trainer" learned from his mistake and doesn't try this particular lesson again...

That is all.

Come on, cut them some slack, it's New Haven for gawds sake. With training like this no wonder they want to issue every officer a smartphone. Probably figure if they are busy playing angry birds they cant shoot themselves. http://www.nhregister.com/articles/2012/03/05/news/new_haven/doc4f55804267101028202351.txt?viewmode=fullstory

Not exactly the same, but in Washington yesterday, a child got their hands on dad's gun, and accidently shot their sister.

A very similar situation to what happened in Bremerton a few weeks ago, except in this case, daddy is a Marysville Police Officer who left a pistol in the car.

Luckily, the 7-year old is going to make it, but it will be intersting to see if the dad faces similar charges to the mom in the Bremerton shooting.
