What Caliber For Woolly Mammoth?

Stretch sends in news of the latest in custom big safari hunts:

Russian and Korean Researchers Will Inject Mammoth DNA Into Elephant Eggs, Resurrecting 10,000-Year-Old Beast
First a plant from the past sprouted new life — now researchers in Russia and South Korea are moving forward with a plan to resurrect the Ice Age woolly mammoth. Scientists in both countries inked a deal Tuesday to share technology and research that could lead to the birth of a mammoth clone, gestated in a surrogate Indian elephant mother.
Snarky title aside, the scientist in me can't help but wonder what kinds of implications this might have in the modern world. Can any species really be considered extinct if cloning can take preserved cells and re-introduce the species? Might we someday be arguing about an anti-hunting group hindering a dodo shoot? Big game safari featuring the sabre-toothed tiger? New mammoth ivory 1911 grips?

The possibilities are endless!

That is all.

Technically this will just be a wooly mammoth-like creature as it will have modern Elephant components to it. Further as we saw with the Dolly cloning there are still some things we haven't quite figured out in making a viable embryo from DNA samples.

Still it'll be cool, and there will be a lot to learn from it.

Still no matter what we see we'll always wonder what is of a true Mammoth, and what is an artifact of the creation of the embryo...

Just don't mix in any frog DNA!

Oh, I don't know. Frog legs with thighs the size of a T. Rex's might be pretty popular for 4th of July barbecues.

As we used to say where I grew up, "Them's good eatin'!"

Does this mean that the idiots in washington will soon restore the irrigation water to california farms because the snail darter fish can be saved?

Would you have to throw the Dodo in the air to legally shoot it? PULL! Squawk! Blam!

Do you do a long roast in the smoker for mammoth, or is it more of a braising meat?

The Russkies will probably charge $1,000,000 (in gold) for a mammoth hunting license. Trophy not guaranteed. And I'm not going after one of those things with anything smaller than a .700 Nitro. Belt fed.

DaddyBear: I think mammoth is traditionally eaten raw, or charred in a brush fire.

Daddybear, probably braising. Although, if I'm remembering correctly, mammoths browsed on shrubs rather than grazing on purely grass, so they might be a bit more tender than a mastadon would have been. In summer and fall, that is. Anything would have been pretty tough in spring, after their fat reserves were used.

Before anyone gets worried about my sanity, I researched this kind of stuff for a history book. :)
