Husband shoots, kills intruder in attempt to save wife in St. Charles
ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Police are investigating after an intruder was shot and killed during an apparent home invasion in St. Charles Wednesday night. The incident happened inside a home in the 1600 block of Duvall Court just before 10 p.m.Things rapidly went from bad to worse, with the 20 year old intruder grabbing the wife and refusing to let go - even after the husband produced a handgun and ordered him to leave. So he got a .38 Special round to the chest for not listening - seems like a fair exchange. Given that the intruder was more than 1/3 the man's age, it's not likely that the man was going to go toe-to-toe with the intoxicated man holding his wife hostage.
Officials said a 64-year-old man and a 57-year-old woman were watching television when they noticed someone looking inside their home. Police said a man then threw a paving stone through a window and barged through the door.
I'm going to step in right now and head something off:
Sources said Carlton had visited the house next door the night before and had been drinking. They said he didn’t previously know the victims. Now, that's a poorly constructed sentence, but I think it means that he had been in the neighborhood visiting friends nearby, and that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. I don't want to hear about how he "was confused and went to the wrong house" and how he "doesn't deserve to die for making a mistake". It's unfortunate that someone so young lost their life, yes - but if they can't hold their liquor to the point of walking into someone's home and holding someone hostage? Well, sometimes mistakes can be very costly.
Again, I have to reiterate. We don't have a magic scanner that points out that the guy breaking into your house is just drunk and has confused your residence for his friends' house next door. We have no idea that the person who reeks of alcohol and who is grabbing our loved one in a violent manner is a "good kid" who is "making a mistake" - all we know is that our loved one is in trouble, and that we need to do something before our loved one is hurt. Or worse.
Sometimes, stupid is fatal - our job is to make sure we're not the ones that pay for someone else's stupidity with our lives.

That is all.

Hi Jay,
I knew you'd talk about this one, this one happened very close to my neck of the woods. As Forrest Gump said "stupid is as stupid does".

PS Love that goblin count :)
Geez, Jay, I like to have a few drinks myself, but I have never thought breaking in to someone's house and holding someone hostage became a good idea after a few beers.
It seems to me that "breaking in..." doesn't really describe the entry. "Barged in..." doesn't cut it, either. C'mon: He threw a paving stone through a window - after having been seen by the home's residents. The 'mistaken house' excuse simply doesn't work here.
Are the authorities going to go after the ones who supplied liquor to the underage goblin?
If they're going to try making a case that he was drunk....
