Neat Idea - for America...

I talked to the good folks at Secret Compartment Furniture at the NRA convention earlier this month. They make a really unique set of furniture with hidden compartments, like this coffee table:

As you can see by the special drop-down sections, it has secret compartments. What you can't see from this angle, though, is this:

Yep, it's a coffee table you can stick a shotgun inside. Mere words cannot express how much I love this idea. (Note: Both pictures are from the Secret Compartment Furniture website. Somehow, and I'll plead insanity here, I forgot to take pictures of these wonderful items).

Looking at the various pieces they offer, you can't tell there's a hidden compartment. There was an unfair advantage at the NRA convention - they had their company name all over the place, so you knew to look for something hidden. I find it extremely unlikely that anyone would think to look twice at these pieces - at least as a hiding place. It's well-made, attractive furniture, so in that sense it stands out a bit, but there's nothing that says "hey, take a second look here" that might tip off a goblin.

Now, I really can't make use of these items. Living in the land of "safe storage" laws, I'd have to put a trigger lock on anything I put inside one of their hiding spots - negating the purpose of having something quick at the ready. I'd be better served with a hidden gun safe. For those in free America, though, there's a bunch of really great ideas for the extra edge "just in case". Whether it's a nightstand with a drop-down side where you can stash your Glock right next to the bed or a coffee table with a Mossberg surprise, there's a piece of Secret Compartment furniture you can use.

Go take a look - they've got some really neat stuff there!

That is all.

It's a wonderful idea but I don't think it's useful for houses with kids. My sister and I found little holes, nooks and crannies in the furniture - candy storage, duh! - that my mom never DREAMED were there.

Can easily put a "Tot Lok" on these things--helps keep the little ones from getting in the compartments!

Now that is really awesome! Almost as awesome as your Dodge 3500 Hybrid picture :)
