So TheBoy had his first baseball practice last night. When I got the call from his coach, there were only two coaches signed up - that's why I offered to help - but we picked up another coach along the way. That makes four of us, with another dad offering to help out as well.
We worked on some basics yesterday, more for the coaches to observe the skill level of the different players than anything else. We have mostly third and fourth graders, and TheBoy and another boy as the "old men" of the team representing the fifth grade. We got an idea of who our power hitters were; who needs help getting the ball from second to first; and who won't be able to be left alone in the outfield without wandering off in the woods.
All in all it was an excellent first practice, all things considered, and the rain even held off until the end. The boys seemed enthusiastic about playing, the dads who are coaching aren't trying to relive their glory years through their sons, and we appear to have a pretty strong team.
And I spent about 45 minutes catching for the boys during batting practice - I think I might be able to feel my knees by Easter...
That is all.

Just between us, Jay; were there any "cup checks" in the general vicinity of your "knees"? :)
Yep it's that time of year again.
My Son decided to play this year after taking last year off. There were not enough boys to make a 1st or 2nd grade team so we combined and are playing second graders.
Now it's time to teach only son to not cringe when the ball comes at you, to quit picking daisies at short stop, and how to hit a moving ball for his first year of coach pitch.
As for reliving my glory days I hope he does better than that. I am much better at histting moving targets with things that go boom than sticks.
"left alone in the outfield without wandering off in the woods"
That's my old position...
(um, the wandering off into the woods part... not the left alone in the outfield part)
