Honey, I Shrunk The Sig...

(I have been waiting to use that title for a while now...)

A few weeks back, when I was at the NRA Convention in St. Louis, I called the Mrs. to see how things were going and she told me that I got a package from SIG SAUER. Turns out it was this:

That's a SIG SAUER P250 Caliber X-Change kit. It allows rapid conversion between calibers by changing the slides, but also between frame sizes. The fire control assembly here:

(picture from SIG product site)

allows the internals to be swapped between grip frames for rapid interconversion between full size, compact, and sub-compact sizes. Here's what comes in the box:

New grip frame, slide, barrel, magazine, and guide rod.

The process is very simple: Clear the pistol, then lock the slide back, rotate the takedown lever, and slide the slide and barrel off the frame. Remove the takedown lever, then pivot the fire control unit out of the grip frame. Perform in reverse in the new grip, and you can interconvert at will.

The good folks at SIG SAUER were kind enough to send a .45 ACP Subcompact X-Change kit (fresh off the production line, from what I heard) to go with the .45 ACP Compact model I received for T&E at the beginning of the year. Interestingly enough, I picked the P250 up at my FFL right before leaving for SHOT Show, and the X-Change kit arrived while I was at the NRA Convention...

How do the sizes compare? I'll let the pictures do the talking:

The most obvious difference is the size; however note that the subcompact frame has a rounded trigger guard and no rail. It's obviously set up for concealed carry. Here's another shot:

There's a marked difference in height and length between the two frame sizes. I compared the sub-compact to my Glock 30, and it's actually smaller than the Glock by a few millimeters here and there (I'd show a picture, but I have to leave something for the actual product review!).

And, one last thing. It is possible using this kit to recreate the fabled SIG 245:

A polymer-framed SIG P245 - what will they think of next?

That is all.

I've handled the 250. They feel good in the hand and have really nice triggers that feel like an awesome DA revolver trigger. But I've also heard of a lots of QC problems with the series.

BTW: I still have Alan's old 245.

Lissa,

One of the biggest selling points for the P250, IMHO, is the modularity. You can swap calibers and sizes in a matter of minutes - you can go from a full size .45 ACP gun for home defense to a sub-compact 9mm for CCW in less than 5 minutes.

Hmmm. I sense a video post coming on...

Roadkill,

I know that the plural of anecdote is not data, and that n=1 is a lousy statistical sample, but the P250 I've been testing has been almost boringly reliable. So far it is the only T&E semi-automatic that I've had that has yet to have any failures of any kind...

But Honey, I DID only buy one gun like we discussed....
and three barrels, and three frames, and six magazines, and multiple calibers of ammunition for them all.

I wonder how this is perceived in the one gun purchase per month states, or in the states that insist on you listing the guns on your carry license.

So what's the serialized part on that??

Z,

It's the actual fire control unit - trigger, hammer, etc.

Kinda like an AR lower, actually...

It's real slick, I have to admit. I'm looking forward to getting the subcompact variant to the range and see how they compare.

Amazing

I have a compact and love it! No misfires, no jams. Shoots beautifully! I only wish it was about 1 lb. Lighter trigger,(on an already low lb. pull) for my girl!! ^ - ^
