Interesting Question - and More...

Daniel in Brookline e-mailed me with a question I couldn't answer:
Do you have any idea what sidearm Yasser Arafat carried?  All I can find online are references to his "trademark chrome-plated .357 Magnum".
He's hoping it's not a S&W model 19, but in this picture:

  (from Wikipedia)

...that sure looks like a Smith & Wesson revolver to me. That picture is from 1970, so it's right around the time that Taurus was cloning S&W revolvers, but I would imagine that Arafat would have had a S&W, not a Taurus. Looking at the picture, it's most likely a 2.5" barrel model 19, although that doesn't look chromed (more likely nickel) to me.

Daniel also had another interesting idea:
Take it as blogfodder if you like -- what guns did famous (or infamous) people carry?  No doubt there are some fun surprises to be found there.
IIRC, Saddam Hussein had a gold-accented Browning Hi-Power; Osama bin Laden had his trademarked AK-47; Churchill was said to be a fan of the Thompson; and Hitler used his Walther PPK to end his life. Ronald Reagan often told a story of helping thwart a robbery using a 1911 (you know Ronaldus Maximus would carry a 1911); Teddy Roosevelt was a fan of Winchester lever action rifles, and General Patton carried a Colt .45 LC single action revolver.

What other famous - or infamous - people's guns can we think of?

That is all.

Patton wore an ivory-handled revolver on each hip. You mentioned the .45 Peacemaker, the other was a S&W Registered Magnum. Churchill during the Boer war favored the C96 Broomhandle Mauser.

Churchill carried a broomhandle during the Boer war, but was rumored to use a 1911 for personal protection during WWII.

Saddam owned a hipower of some origin, but was captured carrying a Makarov.

Patton also had a beat up Colt Pocket Hammerless

Clyde Barrow (of Bonnie and Clyde) favored a BAR, although there's a story that he had a little trouble with it at one point. He was shooting it out in the country and it wouldn't stop firing when he let go of the trigger.

I think Teddy Roosevelt had an FN 1900

Some photos of Saddam show him firing a SMLE into the air from his balcony.
FDR is purported to have kept a revolver in his desk drawer.

Also, I think Saddam had a Glock. I think A. Hitler was a Smith and Wesson owner.

Macarthur carried a 1903 pocket hammerless.

Dillinger had a Colt 1908.. as well as a F/A 1911 in .38 Super with a Thompson front grip.

I seem to remember hearing that Saddam's Glock was an 18.

Rick Perry goes jogging (and shoots coyotes) with a Ruger LCP.

FDR carried a FN Browning .32 of some sort (probably an FN 1910)

Eleanor carried a S&W .38 (probably a Model 10 of some sort)

Ted Nugent carries a Glock 20 just about everywhere he goes.

On Sylvester Stallone's California Carry permit he needed to list all the guns he might carry under it (stupid law)
He listed a Walther PPK in .380, a Browning hi-Power in 9
A Glock 21 and a Beretta model 20 in .25.

Of course Sly was a big supporter of the AWB which demonized those evil Hi-Capacity guns he carried...

Reagan had a carry permit in California because Communists in the Hollywood unions were threatening him when he was head of the Screen
Actor's Guild.

The gun....................
........wasn't a 1911.

I think it was a Colt revolver in
.32 Long.
(Of course he may still have been a Democrat at the time).

We all have things that make us
wonder "What was I thinking?"
in our pasts, eh?

Saddan also was filmed firing what looked an awful lot like a Ruger
77 with the International-style stock.

Often wondered what round it took.

On Calif. CCW's only three guns can be listed. Do not get caught with an unlisted gat.

On churchill he started carrying a Mauser C-96 in the Boer War but during WWII he carried a 1911 in .455 and a Colt Pocket in .32 ACP There is a pic of him at the Imperial War Museum in London with all 3 pistols, and they have his Colt Pocket in a display, or at least they did back in 1981

Churchill started carrying the Mauser pistol even before the Boer War. He picked it up when he was getting ready for the expedition into Sudan with Kitchener, as a last minute replacement for a revolver that needed repair. He probably had chances to try most of the small arms of his era, from the 1890's to the 1940's.

I'm pretty uninterested in the 1911, but I would do things for one in 455. I would do a great many things.

Anyway, Lou Ferigno owned a Beretta 3032.

Um... I own a nickel-plated 2.5" Model 19.

Just sayin'.

Well, Elvis' favorite was a 1911. Who else REALLY matters?

More about Churchill; I have heard it theorized that he was the first person in the world to fire a broomhandle Mauser in anger, during the Sudanese campaign.

Also Gavrilo Pricip used a Fabrique Nationale Model 1910 to help get Europe out of its long century without a big old fashioned war.

George H.W. Bush (i.e. Senior), I was told by a former Secret Service agent carried a NAA .22 revolver in his pocket during his presidency.
