Two Days, Two Additions...

Reader Tim sends in the latest addition to the count:

Homeowner kills intruder during invasion on Detroit's west side
DETROIT (WXYZ) - Police say a husband and wife woke up to see two men breaking in their bedroom window. The husband then grabbed a gun and shot one of the invaders in the head.

That invader died. The second invader returned fire and shot at the homeowner's son. He then jumped through a picture window and out the front of the home in a desperate attempt to get away.
Unfortunately the man's wife was hit during the exchange, but it appears she will be okay. It does highlight a few things, though - first off, notice that the bad guy in this instance shot back. He didn't hit anything, and appeared to be far more interested in getting the hell out of Dodge than hitting the guy shooting at him, but he did return fire. Something to keep in mind - they might shoot at you. Secondly, while it's tempting to Monday morning quarterback the guy's actions and critique him hitting his wife, this was obviously an extremely high stress situation, and I can't fault anyone for less-than-perfect marksmanship in such an event. It is worth pointing out that sometimes, friendly fire can be more dangerous than unfriendly...

At least in this case one goblin got what was coming to him, and the other's going to jail - a rousing success by any measure!

Dead Goblin Count: 286

That is all.

Given the apparent situation, I have to wonder if the wife was between the husband and the window (probably where she normally sleeps), and in the confusion of the moment simply raised her arm into the husband's line of fire while trying to get out of the way.

That's one of the few scenarios I would consider a shooting accidental rather than negligent.

How does anyone know whose bullet struck the wife? Are you going to tell me you have enough faith that the police determined that on the scene without waiting for ballistic tests or checking for the different types of powder residue that may have been in the wound. It is unlikley those tests were done in that short a time. As for either the husband or wife saying it was from the husbands gun, as you pointed out, stress in such a situation runs high and as has been pointed out time and time again over the years - eyewitness testimony is, in general, the weakest type of evidence. I have to wonder hw anyone definitively figured out it was the husband who shot the wife in that short amount of time.

Good point. Rule 2: If the media doesn't know, they just make shit up.

Surprised no one's said this yet...

H-H-H-H-HEADSHOT!

And ooh, reading the comments on the article reveals a surprisingly good point: the homeowner should sue the surviving goblin to recover medical bills, pain and suffering, etc incurred by the wife getting shot.

I find this the perfect example of how bad friendly fire can be.

I don't know the lay out of the room or where the players were. I'm glad all the right players are going to recover.

Glenn is right in that it's hard to determine who shot who unless there is other evidence such as over penetration and she was in another room. I don't trust the media to get the facts right though.

Interesting that the goblin shot at the guy's son -- suppression fire, maybe?

Spray and pray works when trying to break contact - which is what bad guy #2 was doing.
