Woman injured in Agawam police shooting
Since they arrested the other person in the dispute, it's most likely that the woman they shot was the person who called them for help. That's one hell of a response, eh? Call 911, get shot by the people allegedly coming to help you? Such a shame that the fundamentals of safe gun handling escape the very people that the Bradys et al think should be the only ones who should be allowed to carry firearms, isn't it?AGAWAM, Mass.—Agawam police say they accidentally shot a 21-year-old woman in an apartment while responding to a 911 call about a break-in and possible domestic assault. The Republican reports that the incident early Saturday left the unidentified woman with a nonfatal injury. Police did not provide details.
It's easy to second-guess and armchair quarterback, of course. We don't know exactly how the call came in or how the information was relayed to the officers on scene - there's a world of difference between "possible break-in, might be domestic" and "someone just kicked in the door and started stabbing people" - but it doesn't grant carte blanche to just rush in already squeezing the trigger.
Perhaps Law Enforcement should no longer be exempt from the heavy MA trigger pulls mandated for the rest of us?
That is all.

How does one "accidentally" shoot a person? We (the gunnie community)differentiate between an AD (mechanical malfunction of the firearm) and ND (at least 1 of the 4 Rules violated) all the time. How come the cops have "accidents"?
I really want to say something snarky about how most folks stopped having "accidents" before they entered kindergarten, but I just can't seem to word it just right. Anybody want to help a fella out?
stay safe.
OOH. I smell a meme coming on.
Something along the lines of "Rule 3: Because responsible folks stoppped having accidents in pre-school"...
Did you ever notice how accidentally is now synonymous with mistakenly, negligently, and stupidly...

So an accidental discharge would be one when something mechanical goes wrong and you are telling us all that there could not be negligence involved in such! If I hold a rifle, and place it on safe, and the gun fires without my finger on the trigger - was it an accidental or negligent discharge by your definition (or should I say by the definition of those in the gunnie world as you claimed). The company who manufactured a rifle that malfunctions like that would quite possibly be negligent and maybe the guy who put on the safety and fired the gun if he was previously aware of the problem and did not have it fixed - yet it was mechanical in nature.
No - an accidental discharge is one that is unintentional. That is it plain and simple. A negligent discharge is one in which negligence (something was done wrong by someone) played a part whether or not intentional or unintentional (as in accidental). An accidental discharge thus could be classified either as an accident due to negligence or as an accident without negligence. An act of negligence could be classified as one that was accidental (as in unintentional) or one that was purposeful. While both terms can modify the other they do not necessarily define the other.
All the best,

It could also be a simple example of Most Cops Can't Shoot. Because for so many officers, their gun is a tool, no different than a crescent wrench or a hammer. And if you only use a tool a couple times each year, your skill and proficiency with it will suffer.
Dear GlenB -
"While both terms can modify the other they do not necessarily define the other."
Please do not play Humpty Dumpty. AD and ND have been standardized as tems to differentiate between that which happened without volitional action on the part of te shooter and that which happened because the shooter acted negligently. If you want to bring the manufacturer into the arena of blame for a ND, then I get to bring your parents and all your teachers into the arena of blame for your being boneheaded.
stay safe.
