Rare baseball card brings $92K in Maine auction

BIDDEFORD, Maine — A rare 148-year-old baseball card discovered at a rural Maine yard sale has been auctioned for $92,000.

The card depicting the Brooklyn Atlantics amateur baseball club was sold by Saco River Auction Co. in Biddeford Wednesday night and it drew plenty of interest.

$92K for a baseball card that was purchased in a lot for less than $100. Not a bad ROI at all. When I think about all the Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice cards that got destroyed in the spokes of my Schwinn, and what those cards would be worth today, it's all I can do to keep from crying. Then again, if I had kept my original Star Wars action figures in their original packaging, I'd have something there, too...

Worth noting in the article is the Honus Wagner card that sold for $2.8 million dollars. I think of this every time someone mentions seeing an AR-15 selling for $3,000 and what a rip-off they think that price is. In a (allegedly) free market such as we have, there's no such thing as a "rip-off" for non-essential goods. No one is forced to pay 4X normal cost for an item simply because demand is up; no one is forced to pay millions of dollars for a rare baseball card. It's when market forces are thwarted - like when the federal government places restrictions on items or forces people to buy health insurance - that prices can be unfair.

Yet suggest that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme and watch all hell break loose...
