Violent Armed Robber Shoots Would-Be ‘Victim’ During Hold Up — But It Was the Criminal Who Left in a Body Bag
On Tuesday night, an armed would-be robber approached a Miami man outside his apartment building and demanded his belongings.
Though it is not clear why, the robber then shot the victim in the hand. He didn’t know it at the time, but it would turn out to be a senseless violent act that cost him his life.My shriveled black heart is lightened at the turn of events here. Who knows why the robber shot his victim? Maybe it was a ploy to frighten the victim so he wouldn't go to the police. Maybe he thought the victim wasn't moving fast enough. Maybe he was just a sadistic bastard who wanted to make his victim suffer.
You know what, though? It doesn't matter why he shot the victim, because that was enough of a motivator to turn "victim" into "survivor".
We are programmed to not want to kill our own species. It's a good thing, really, otherwise we'd never have gotten out of the caves. It's easy to armchair quarterback and say "I'd have shot the SOB first chance I got" - and while some of us can/would do just that, it's not a weakness to be unable to pull the trigger; it's being human. There's a line, I believe it's in Clint Eastwood's excellent Unforgiven: "It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have."
When the robber shot his victim, he shattered any notions the victim previously held. The encounter went from "well, he's got my money, that stinks, but I can get more" to "holy s**t, he's going to kill me". And that's when the bias against killing your own species goes right out the window. We've got two basic instincts when our lives are threatened: flight or fight. Since you can't outrun a bullet, and since the aggressor has literally drawn first blood, running is a great way to get shot in the back.
So he pulled his own gun and shot the bastard dead. Good for him.

Indeed! I agree completely. There's a world of difference between an armed aggressor before and after he takes that first shot. It's the difference between "ohmigod he's got a GUN" to "that shot didn't go through my head, but the next one might"... meaning, once he's actually used the gun, the rules have changed and it's open season.
The other thought that comes to mind is: "What's the use of carrying a gun? If the bad guy has a gun too, he's got the drop on you, so you'll never even get a chance to draw it." Apparently not!
