I See Dumb People...

Fresh in off the BLNN is this facepalm-worthy story...

NYC teacher fired after sending revealing photos from school email
NEW YORK – A New York City teacher who once worked as a male model has lost his job after sending bare-chested photographs of himself using an elementary school email address.
The New York Post and the Daily News report that 32-year-old special-education teacher Matthew Maleski was responding to personal ads on Craigslist when he sent photos of himself wearing only boxer shorts.
Here's the kicker - the e-mail account was shared with another teacher. Now, whatever this guy does in his spare time is his own business. Maybe there's a "Code of Conduct" in the NYC teacher's book; I have no idea nor do I care. However, I know that if I use my work e-mail address to send out racy pictures of myself (stop laughing; this is theoretical here), I am very likely to find myself fired for violating the sexual harassment policy. The one that they've had training about every year that I've been here.

I also find the claim that he intended to use his personal e-mail somewhat suspect. Last I checked, you need to input the e-mail address into a Craigslist ad, so it's hard to see how, "oops! Wrong address!" would be applicable. And honestly? If you're a teacher and you can't figure out how to paste an e-mail address into a field? You might want to go into a less-challenging career. And if you're using your school e-mail on Craigslist person ads on purpose? Well, you don't have much of a choice now, do you?

Any guesses on whether or not the union goes to bat for this guy?

That is all.

Wait... They FIRED a NYC school teacher?!? How the hell did THAT happen? They normally end up in NYC's "rubber rooms" at full pay for however many years it takes to work through the appeals process.

He's a guy. Of course the union won't go to bat for him.

No teacher can be fired from the NYC public school system. His appeal process will drag on until he reaches retirement age.

Jay,

Of course the union "goes to bat for this guy". I know you're familiar with the phrase single issue organization; I'm confident you're equally familiar with the one about sauce, geese and equality. Just as the NRA isn't responsible for each of it's members flaws (real or perceived), neither is any union.

That said, the people we elect that write the laws creating public employee unions and then negotiate with same are the ones we allowed to create this ridiculous situation in the first place. We're gonna have to reverse the entire process to fix this I'm afraid.

It's annoying to see people I find admirable falling for such an obvious false argument. The existence of single issue organizations isn't the problem; its our having allowed unions to function in an already privileged work environment that duplicates a union's stated purpose that causes the travesty this exemplifies.

Mea culpa. I couldn't resist the cheap shot...
