WATERTOWN (CBS) – Police are looking for the thieves who broke into a Watertown church and stole a safe, chalices, Bibles, and blessing crosses.
It happened sometime Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning at the Taxiarchae/Archangels Greek Orthodox Church on Bigelow Avenue.
Nice. During Holy Week, some scumbag broke into a church and stole religious artifacts from the church. There's a special level of hell for that. I hope the thief or thieves get help for whatever addiction plaguing them - even if that addiction is an aversion to honest work. I know we're supposed to forgive and all; I know those without sin are supposed to cast the first stone; however, I can't help but hope that the next place these scumbags hit is guarded by a rabid pit bull with herpes...
Or maybe they'll try to salvage some live electrical wires...

Not Holy Week in the Orthodox church. We still follow the rules set forth by the original ecumenical councils regarding the date of Pascha.

I'm trying to imagine what on Earth was motivating them. Stealing a safe, sure, that's what thieves do; and I agree that doing so from a church requires a special level of despicable. But stealing BIBLES? What were they proposing to do with THEM? Did they think Bibles have an especially high resale value?
My best guess is that the thieves had a personal beef with this particular church, and were trying to hurt it. As I said, despicable.
I agree with Daniel that there was a personal motive in the thefts.
@West By G, If you mean where the Eastern Church(es) connected Easter to Passover, I agree that's when it should be observed even though my denomination celebrates it on the same timeline as Catholics.

Stretch mentioned in a prior comment an "Irish" take on church thefts.
Theft from churches in Ireland is quite common. Most of the stealing is done by local lads on drugs who take anything that can be sold to by their "fix" or by organised groups of Travellers (Irish gypsies).
Of course, the parish priests appeal for the return of the holy items, but in the rare case the thief or thieves are caught the same priest generally doesn't press charges because "turning the other cheek" is the Christian way.
