70-Year-Old Gardner Man Fights Off Home Intruder
GARDNER (CBS) — Seventy-year-old Michael Salame has eight heart stents, nerve damage and apparently quite a right hook, as an alleged home invader found out.
It was about 3 a.m. Saturday when Salame was at home with his girlfriend and heard something outside.
A seventy year old man - with his girlfriend - beat the bag out of a 24 year old intruder. Took him to the ground and whomped the crap out of him. You know something? If you're in the prime of your life and you get the living hell beaten out of you by a septuagenarian, you deserve every bit of crap you get in prison.
Later in the story we find out that Salame was a welder, which certainly explains his tenacity and ability to put a younger man down. Two groups of people you just don't mess with are welders and masons. Masons especially - you tend to develop a bit of muscle when the *light* tools are 4 pounds each...
There's also the obligatory note from the police to not resist intruders. I honestly don't understand this mindset, I don't. Sure, you might get lucky and find the 1 in 100 intruder who is really just looking for something to grab and run, but do you really want to put yourself up against an unknown assailant and rely on their good graces?
I'd prefer to rely on Mssrs. Smith & Wesson, thank you.
That is all.

It's sign of my low expectations for Massachusetts that I was halfway through the post before I realized the title referred to the burglar, not the victim.
He TOLD those Kids "...to Stay off My Lawn!"
Good job by the homeowner. Rather than rely on wishful thinking he called for backup, then didn't hesitate to do unto others before they did unto him.
I think it's funny the intruder tried to buy him off. Bit off a little more than we could chew, eh?
Rely on their good graces!?!??!?! Sheeesh, just the fact they are committing a crime means they DON'
T have good graces.....wish the libs would understand that.

I did a little bit of bricklaying in my younger days. Enough to learn that I wasn't tough enough to be a bricklayer ...
Welding would be cool because you have a 1000 degree flame.
Yep, that is one TOUGH old man... :-)
Police don't want you to resist. If you did, they would largely be out of a job. Who is going to protect those who protect themselves?
"Who is going to protect those who protect themselves?"
I've seen at least two bloggers who are law enforcement officers who said (in essence), "We'd rather have you do what you have to in order to protect yourself, then call us to clean up afterwards."
There's less paperwork for the cop if he doesn't have to shoot somebody.
You'll notice that the "we don't recommend self help" statements almost always come from elected officials, police chiefs, or department spokespersons. They have to stick to the official government position. The rest of the force do not necessarily agree with them.
That 24 year old is going to get passed around the cell block like a joint.
Add commercial fishermen to the list. I have a friend who grew up working on his father's lobster boat.
You would not want him to hit you, not at all.
I'd say that they should send this kid to a women's prison, but they'd beat him worse then the men would.
3rd catagory blacksmiths.
Flesh and bone dont stand up too well to someone who beats STEEL for a living
