CLEVELAND -- A determined fundraiser who rubbed elbows with powerful politicians while masterminding a $100 million, cross-country Navy veterans charity fraud could face the rest of his life in prison.Personally, I'd like to see something in the sentencing involving the words "fire ant hill" or "stocks in the town square," but I guess we have to take what we can get these days. Maybe if we could just get this guy sentenced in a military tribunal rather than a court of law... In any case, any punishment they give this POS isn't going to be sufficient.
The defendant, who identifies himself as 67-year-old Bobby Thompson but who authorities say is Harvard-trained attorney John Donald Cody, was scheduled to be sentenced Monday.
Normally, in cases of fraud like this - money given freely but under false pretenses - I'd be more inclined to punish the lawbreaker by imposing a draconian fine. I think it's more instructive - and certainly pour encouragez les autres - for the lawbreaker in this case to go free, yet have to spend the remainder of their lives toiling to repay their victims.
In this case, though, I'd like to see sentencing from the Navy of old, what with the lashes and whatnot...
