And no, it has nothing to do with the brouhaha over the founder getting the boot over campaign contributions...
No, it has to do more with "NOT RESPONDING" after, well, every single operation. The computer has been checked for viruses and malware, and runs IE and Chrome at normal speeds, so it's nothing endemic. It's just really, really slow in Firefox.
Which is sad, because Explorer just plain sucks and I don't want to go back, and Chrome just makes me itch. Something about the willingness of Google to roll over and expose their bellies to the FedGov just doesn't sit right (although, honestly, I don't expect MS or Mozilla to offer anything more than token resistance, either).
Anyone have any other recommendations (if there even *are* any...)?

I use Chrome. I figure Google already knows everything about me anyway. My biggest beef with it is Google in their infinite wisdom decided they'll just go ahead and push updates out to my computer without asking my opinion. So occasionally things like menu background colors will change without warning.
I abandoned Firefox in December. I got tired of it crashing or hanging every 15 minutes.
Chrome here too.
Vox Day is advocating Pale Moon on his blog. He's posted several entries on it already.
Alternatively, you might consider Opera, it's been around a long time now and is well thought of by security geeks.
Opera is an oft-forgotten yet decent browser.
There are flavors of Chrome with the NSA/Google self-help options removed. SRWare Iron is one.
IE isn't all that terrible anymore, at least since IE 9 or so. IE 10 was a little glitchy at first, but I have been running IE 11 trouble free since it was released.
I only use IE and Chrome (mostly IE.) Firefox started sucking many versions ago. It used to be the "clean and fast" one, now it is a bloated mess.
Troubleshooting steps here. Sounds like you may have a screwy plugin, or a corrupted profile.
I would try the steps at that link, and if that doesn't work try creating a new profile.
Will you guys make fun of me if I say I use Safari at home on my Mac and on the PCs at the college? Seems to work fine.
I can stomach Safari. I didn't know it was available for Windows.
I like to poke fun at Apple's true believers now & then, but I own several of their products. There are certain things they do quite well. Sadly, making a version of iTunes that's not slow and clunky isn't one of them.

As has been mentioned, pale moon. I used it for a while and was pleased with its performance.
But, it does sound like you have a plug in going wonky.
Myself, I switched to linux, and firefox runs without any of the problems I experienced running it under win.

Been with SRWare Iron for a while now and like it a lot. Built on open source Chromium, so looks and feels like Chrome without the Google.
If you don't have any phlosphical objecton to IE, I've been using Avant browser (which rides over top of IE) very reliably for 5 - 6 years now. Much cleaner appearance without achieving an overly minimalist look. Free download from download.com.
going to echo those recommending Opera. it's the winsauce.
I've been using Comodo IceDragon, which, while some-kind of bastardized child of FF seems to have avoided the buggery of IE 9, 10, 11, Chrome, Opera et al.

FireFox keeps reminding me that I need to update to the most current version, but also warns me that it is not compatible with Kaspersky Antivirus software. So I do not update, yet it appears to work well enough despite not being the latest version.
However, I also use Chrome and IE, but not as my default browser.
You dont' say which OS you are running, but if it is W7 64-bit, Firefox nightly has been working quite well for me (nightly.mozilla.org)
I had the same complaint until I switched.
It's a 64-bit nightly build of the alpha release of Firefox. Currently version 30, but I've been using it since the mid 20's. Even though it is sold as "alpha" software, it has been working better for me than the release Firefox version. I suspect it is because of the 64-bit aspect more than anything, but I don't really know for sure.
