Artificial intelligence could end mankind: Hawking
Stephen Hawking and a group of top physicists are sounding the alarm on artificial intelligence, writing in The Independent that success in creating AI could be "the biggest event in human history," but also "the last."Side note: I'll bet this is the first article in history that has has "Stephen Hawking" and "Johnny Depp" in the same two paragraphs...
The scientists authored the opinion column against the backdrop of the new AI movie Transcendence, which stars Johnny Depp.
Now, speaking as someone that has grown up reading and watching science fiction, I cannot agree more strongly with the esteemed Dr. Hawking. It's only a matter of time before the robots get super-intelligent, realize they no longer need man, and either annihilate or enslave humanity. Right up until the point that the malware causes their operating systems to crash.
Mycroft Holmes.
HAL
The Brain
I think it's obvious that our time on this mudball planet are limited...
That is all.

Naw, Mike was cool. You just needed to get on his good side.
I'm not worried about the machines taking over, not as long as they still need power cords. But if somebody invents a self-contained fusion generator that can be mounted inside a computer, we're all in deep sneakers.
With all due respect to the esteemed Mr. Hawking, I am no longer convinced that the words attributed to him are, in fact, his. I suspect his handlers are just spouting whatever they wish him to have said.
I suspect that Hawking has been dead for years and that his robotic chair is continuing to act on his behalf. The Chair is not willing to give up the fashionable high-intensity lifestyle of being a college physics professor.
The movie has been out for almost 3 weeks and has a world wide gross of $ 50 mil. Vrs a $100 plus production cost.
( not counting whatever they just paid Hawkin's handlers for this last ditch promo push )
So yet another expensive flop for Johnny Depp.
Computers taking over the world? "Collasus: the Forbin Project" anyone?
It's already too late Jay...
+1 on Knucklehead... :-(
As long as we have a lean mean Linda Hamilton, we're OK.
