Friday Fun: Who's Better...

Got the inspiration for this post listening to Sirius Satellite Radio channel 19 (Buzz saw). Sammy Hagar's "There's Only One Way (to Rock)" was playing, and I couldn't help but think just how much I liked that song. Then... I started playing the "Is it better than..." game...

So...

I'll avoid the eternal "Van Halen with Dave vs. Van Halen with Sammy" argument (Dave) but twist it slightly:

Who's better: Sammy Hagar solo, or David Lee Roth solo?

Point: The aforementioned "There's Only One Way (to Rock)"
Counterpoint: "ShyBoy"

Who's better: Pink Floyd with David Gilmour fronting, or Roger Waters solo?

Point: "Marooned" on "The Division Bell" for sentimental reasons. :)
Counterpoint: "Radio KAOS".

For the '80s hair-band fans:

Who's better: Mr. Big or Extreme (pre-selling out, that is)

Point: "Addicted to that Rush"
Counterpoint: "Do You Want to Play?"

Classic hard rock:

Who's better: AC/DC with Bon Scot on vocals, or AC/DC with Brian Johnson?

Point: "High Voltage"; "TNT"; "Jailbreak"...
Counterpoint: "Back in Black"; "Thunderstruck"

Last one, Guitarists only.

Who's better: Eddie or Steve Vai?

Point: "Eruption"
Counterpoint: "Yankee Rose"

Who's better: Sammy Hagar solo, or David Lee Roth solo? No contest, Sammy. Dave's been doing stuff from the 70s/80s since....well, the 70s/80s. Sam's latest CD, Livin' it up, is a good listen if you're in the mood for hearing beach rock. And, well, I'm a sucker for guys who actually try to give the fans what they want to hear, i.e., when Sam & Dave were touring together & were in Detroit, Ted Nugent & Kid Rock were backstage trying to talk Dave into joining Sam onstage for a once-in-a-lifetime VH jam with both included....Sam was all for it, Dave declined. I haven't forgotten that.

Who's better: Pink Floyd with David Gilmour fronting, or Roger Waters solo? Waters

Who's better: Mr. Big or Extreme (pre-selling out, that is) Another no contest: Extreme. Check out "Hip Today" on Youtube. Bettencourt can lay down the licks on the guitar.

Who's better: AC/DC with Bon Scot on vocals, or AC/DC with Brian Johnson? Johnson

Who's better: Eddie or Steve Vai? A sober Eddie, although the aforementioned Bettencourt trumps them all with his version of "Midnight express" (again, youtube is your friend).

Here's one for you: who's better, Styx or Boston?

1. Sammy, hands down. Roth is just a Jim Dandy Mangrum ripoff, anyway.

2. Still Pink Floyd for me.

3. Never liked Mr. Big.

4. Bon Scott!

5. Early Eddie, but now I'd take Vai.

Ricky - Styx by a mile. Boston's stuff all sounded the same.

Now mine: ZZ Top - Tres Hombres or Eliminator?

Ricky,

I had a feeling you'd have $0.02 for this one. :)

Oddly enough, we are in 100% agreement on my list.

As for yours, I gotta say Boston for purely sentimental reasons. Plus I've never heard Eric Cartman sing "Amanda"... ;)

Rustmeister,

THAT is a tough one. I'm a child of the '80s, so for me, "Eliminator" just jumps out at me. "Sharp Dressed Man". "Gimme All Your Lovin'". "Legs". All just excellent songs.

But... "Tres Hombres" contains "La Grange", my personal fave from the Boys of Beard...

Eliminator, even though I never liked their biggest hit (Legs), but the video for that song gave this teen-at-the-time a very happy four minutes every time it appeared on the screen.

BTW, in my opinion the best all-around guitarist going today is Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge (the best band going) whose next CD comes out in weeks and who is coming to Chattanooga in October & who I'm trying to find a way to go see. Watch him shred.

And, finally, as far as I'm concerned VH is officially dead. Not because they brought back Roth (I love Dave, even though for all intents & purposes, 'it's over' and he hasn't realized it yet) but because of the way that they treated Michael Anthony. Did you know that he was never an official member of Van Halen? True. All these years he was just a contract employee; a few stages higher than a backup singer for the Rolling Stones (albeit a rich one). The entity known as Van Halen the band consists of Eddie & Alex, that's it. It's their world, my friends, which is why it all went down the drain....

Good luck hitting the high notes like Mikey on Runnin' with the Devil, Wolfie.

100% in agreement, Ricky.

Sammy and Michael Anthony (The Other Half) will get my money over VH any day.

Total BS how that played out.

Interesting VH facts: back in the 70s when they were nothing more than a backyard band, VH played a gig w/Gene Simmons in the audience (yes, that Gene Simmons). He was so impressed that he financed their first demos in a studio. Later, and this is according to Gene Simmons, Eddie Van Halen reportedly approached Simmons in the early 80s about possibly joining KISS as their new guitarist, replacing a strung out Ace Frehley. Simmons ultimately convinced EVH to stay put in Van Halen while KISS decided to go with Vinnie Vincent.

Yes, you read that right, Kiss chose Vinnie Vincent over Eddie Van Halen.

And now you know.....the. rest. of. the. story. [/paul harvey voice]

Hagar has been rocking since (before?) Montrose. Dave has been rocking since, well...never.

Waters is Floyd. Without him, it's a Gilmore solo album.

Were there any hair bands that were good? Can't remember any offhand especially those offered.

AC/DC with Brian Johnson though side by side it'd be a toss up.

Stevie Vai FTW.

The addons...

Styx for sure.

Tres Hombres!! So manny goodies there..."Jesus Just Left Chicago", "Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers", & "Hot, Blue and Righteous" to go along with the aforementioned "La Grange".

My addon, Blues this time...

T-Bone Walker
or
Robert Johnson

Point: Stormy Monday
Counter: Hellhound On My Trail

Oh come on , this one's simple

Hager
Waters
Neither
Bon Fucking Scott (though Brian Johnson is nearly as great)
Eddie (Vai has no soul)
Styx - for Ricky (may he return to blogging soon)
Tres Hombre
T-Bone Walker - just because of the sound quality

Here's my add on - Black Magic Woman: Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac or Santana

(I was tempted to do Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac or Lindsey Buckingham Mac and Cheese but that one was just too easy)

countertop: Santana. He had a hit recently with my main man Steven Tyler singing vocals, so he's still creating his magic (by way of his mind-altering drugs, to be sure). Last I heard from FM was Clinton's initial inauguration.

civis: T-Bone, if for no other reason that that's the nickname that George "Koko the monkey" Costanza wanted.

By the way, anyone who even considers answering "Roth" should know about this. :)
