Alternate title: Jay's got $$$ burnin' a hole in his pocket...
I'm in a quandry: I've got a line on an AMT Back-up .45 for cheap money. Now, I've heard horror stories about the AMT marque, on the one hand; but OTOH, it's not a lot of cash for a reaallllly small .45 ACP.
A friend mentions two of the more commonly mentioned drawbacks - the small size/large caliber round is a handful, and due to the small size/rudimentary sights the gun's not terribly accurate.
My responses are two-fold: S&W 360PD (a.k.a. the Snubbie from Hell™) and my P3AT. I'm used to teeny tiny hand cannons that beat the snot out of my hand, and also less-than-perfect accuracy.
Thoughts? Horror stories?
That is all.

if you can handle the keltec, you can handle the AMT

Dood. You sure do seem to have a lot of gun money. How do you do it? Here is a typical conversation in my house...
me: Honey? Here is all the money I made last week.
wife: good.
me: can I get a new gun?
wife: no.
Well, I just sold a gun, so that's where some of it comes from...
I squirrel away a little here, a little there...
And then I have to pay for new mirrors, and start from scratch...
Dry fire it once first. It has about an 18 lb trigger pull.
Dude, WTF happened to the Great 9mm Debate (a la 92FS, P226, etc.)?
Other than that, I got nuttin. Never shot an AMT.

anon,
That's another complaint I've heard, and one I don't completely discount. The flip side, IMHO, is that the heavier the pull the better, since this is gonna be sittin' in my pocket and if I really NEED to shoot it, I'm gonna be yankin' on that trigger with 25+ lbs. of force anyways...
tweaker,
I still want a 9mm, don't you fret. I've got a line on a 92FS with a couple of hi-caps, and have to decide if that's what I want or if I should pony up extra for the Sig.
I owned a AMT .45 backup years ago, purchsed for $300.00. The firing pin broke 1 day & I was unable to locate a replacement. I had my machine shop buddy fabricate one (3 actually) longer then needed because overall lenght was not known.I kept taking down the length after testing with spent casings. Weeks after having the gun back up & running, I checked Numrich once more & found they had them back in stock. Sold the firearm shortly after that & regretted it down the road. Ended up buying it back 2 weeks ago & will never part with it again.
Dude, are you STILL waffling over this piece?
Jay,
Two "guns that got away":
A Detonics ASP and an AMT.
See a trend? I could have bought the ASP my first tour in Germany ('80) for, like, $200, and the AMT three years ago for $325.
Dang, dang, dang.
And I never should have sold those Bose 901s either.

I'm not waffling, I'm waiting. I called Four Seasons. Someone else has put it on "Hold" and is allegedly going to look at it tomorrow. If they decline, it's mine...
Thanks for the advice everyone!
One thing i will suggest: if you get the AMT, you want to keep a ball round in the chamber. Paint a smiley face on it: when you point that thing at someone, they can SEE the round in the chamber. Make it a lil' classy... ;)
And yes, they DO have the trigger pull from Hell. I'm pretty sure the clutch on a bike is easier to operate with one finger than the trigger of an AMT backup...
strings,
I was thinking about a painting a smiley face on the first round, actually...
Or, even better, a peace symbol...
I have had an AMT BU for 15 years now. Made it through a number of patdowns with it too.
Reliable as, um, nothing really. The round in the pipe would always work but it had issues feeding and stovepiping.
Think of it as a 1 round derringer. Additional shots are rare occurences.
UPDATE: Alas, it is not to be. Someone else has taken home my Back-up .45...
However... Watch this space. Something interesting will be posted later this month.
Heh.
Have two pistols: 1)Stainless AMT 45 cal. ACP Backup, w/case and two clips. 2)Llama 9mm Parabellum w/holster. Both exceptional pistols and in excellent condition.
I have an 45 AMT BACKUP with at least 1K rounds thru it and it is My favorite carry gun!Better than My 38snub by far!
