Okay, here's the bleg. As evident by the post right before this one, the boy took to the BB gun like a duck to water (big shock there...)
All I've got in the airgun department is an ancient Crosman single shot pistol, and I'd like to get a decent air rifle as an intermediate for my son (his own Red Ryder is a given).
Now, I'm not looking for an Olympic-quality air rifle, but I would like something a step or two above the old Crosman 760 I learned on as a child. Criteria are decent accuracy out to 50 - 100 feet (if that's possible with a less-expensive air rifle), scope preferable (Dad has old eyes and needs the advantage...), and (ideally) enough FPS to put a hurtin' on the local groundhog population if need be (which also necessitates a quiet air rifle...)
Any thoughts/recommendations/air rifles to look for (or avoid)?

UPDATE: Looks like I may have found my high(er) end air rifle courtesy of Unc. Soooo...
Are there any semi-automatic air rifles out there? I had a CO2 powered S&W Model 39 knockoff a zillion years ago; does anyone make any AR-15 or (hope of hopes) AK-47 based air rifles? Full auto would be a hoot, too...

Sorry about the typo in the previous post. What about a Crickett with a .22 short ?
It will sound like a lady finger and this time of year especially wouldn't raise a eyebrow.
I have not use an air gun in many seasons but if you have a Bass Pro Shop near by they had a great selection of them from .177 to .22 all air. It is easy to get to the one in Foxboro and well worth the trip if you have not been there. . .
I'm seriously considering a Gamo whisper, but that might be a little too much in your situation.

I've got .22RF pretty well covered, although the Crickett is a good idea for a starter rifle (see Gun pr0n in 2 weeks for what I've got right now)...
The air rifle is, as far as I know, still okay for backyard plinking so long as we don't shoot across the road. I will check with the local PD just to be sure I don't get an unwanted visit...

That's not a bad idea, although Dick's is much closer to me. I think they're heavier on the Airsoft, which is another animal entirely from what I can tell...

Ya, we have a Dick's near us too but I think you will find they don't have much of what I would call a quality air rifle. . . . trust me, I went down to Bass Pro around Christmas and it is worth the trip. . . I don't go back due to the money I would spend. . .

You have got to see the place, and the indoor fish tank (more like huge pool) was a big hit with my kids too.
Anyway back on track. . . they had a bunch of different air rifles, much better selection than our local Dick's does. . .
I have a Gamo 220 with a 4x BSA scope on it. It's a good pellet gun.

How cool would it be to own a gun (even an airgun) that belonged to SayUncle? Gotta admit to a good deal of squee appeal there... ;)
As quiet as an airgun. It won't annoy the neighbors. Quite capable of squirrel and rabbit killing. It groups nice. I just don't have a need for it once my s00per seekrit project is done. Plus, all the ammo I have (which may not be much - have to check).
