Picking Up the Torch

Because someone's gotta do it.

Police say would-be robber carried a .357-caliber handgun*
WORCESTER— Police are continuing to search for the second man involved in the attempted robbery of a liquor store that left his alleged accomplice dead.

The man fled the Richmond Avenue store after the second would-be robber was shot by the clerk, police said.

and:
Mr. Rivera was shot multiple times and taken by ambulance to UMass Memorial Medical Center — University Campus, where he was pronounced dead at 10:46 p.m., according to Detective Capt. Edward J. McGinn Jr.

{Pause to let hooting and hollering die down to a dull roar}

Please note that this happened in the Volksrepublik of MA, so the clerk is in for a world of shit. Yes, even though he was properly licensed; even though he faced a known felon with a lengthy rap sheet who had no business being out on the street, he's going to be out tens of thousands of dollars and most likely lose his permit to own firearms over this righteous shooting.

He is, however, still alive. Good guys 1, Goblins 0

Dead Goblin count: 1.

(Hey, it's gotta start somewhere, right?)

That is all.

After reading the article, it seems pretty obvious to me: the reporter wanted the lede to say it was obviously an armed robbery, so there's no doubt the clerk was acting in self-defense.

I know it's the Masshole Socialist Republic, but isn't the western part of the state just a little more sympathetic to acts of self-defense than Bostonians are? Could it be that the reporter wanted to plant the idea that this was legit self-defense, so that there will be less community anger if the prosecutor chooses not to pursue the case?

Wolf,

Yes, Worcester is considered to be in the western part of the state, but don't kid yourself. The "gun politics" of Worcester are not fun-duh-mental-ly different than those of Boston proper. Keep in mind that MA is a "may issue" state, and the decision to issue an unrestricted license to carry lies with the chief of police of your city/town of residence. That said, the Worcester chief of police rarely issues unrestricted LTC-A's, is a petty tyrant and should be hauled out of office. The fact that our Goblin Exterminator likely had an unrestricted license to carry is probably centered around the fact the he's in retail and routinely deals with lots of cash. In other words, he demonstrated need. A "regular" resident of Worcester would likely need to be "connected" to get such a license.

Jay, others, am I wrong?

Brad, note that the shooting happened in the store. In Mass you may carry on your own property with a restricted permit (or under the supervision of an LTC holder if you don't have one)

So the possibility of the shop keeper getting gunned down after he locked up his gun and was taking his cash bag to the bank drop-box at the end of the day is potentially likely.

Of course most anti-gun chiefs are leinient on shop keepers and coult at least grant an "Employment Purposes Only" restriction which would allow CCW to and from work (but not allow him to stop for a pack of smokes at a 7-Eleven on the way home)

I don't know what condition he had the gun under....I'm just glad he had it.

Also I suspect the guy who ran won't be holding up any packies anytime soon.

The same thing happened north of Chicago recently. Unfortunately, the parent of the deceased is already planning to sue.
