BOHICA, Part II...

As seen, well, everywhere around the gun blogosphere, our new Attorney General (he of the "Americans are cowards about race" fame) Holder has hinted that Obama may very well make good on at least one of his campaign promises and reinstitute the ban on guns that look scary:
The attorney general also suggested that re-instituting a U.S. ban on the sale of assault weapons would help reduce the bloodshed in Mexico, where last year 6,000 people were killed in drug-related violence.

Because, you know, abridging the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding US citizens is going to help quell the incredible violence in Mexico fueled by drug cartels and corrupt Mexican military members...

So, that said, it's coming. I don't share Sebastian's belief that activism can stop this nor Countertop's insistence that this doesn't have the votes. The same things were said about the stimulus package - reports of calls against the stimulus being something like tenfold greater than calls for it, frex - and look where that got us. We're getting another ban. The only question is, how bad will it be?

Will it simply be a reinstatement of the 1994 ban, complete with sunset provision? Doubtful - at the very least, look for this to be permanent. The Obama administration has been pretty consistent that this will be a permanent ban. Will it encompass more arms than the 1994 ban? If HR 1022 or HR 6257 are any indication, yes, most certainly - look at the expanded lists of affected firearms. Notice, if you will, that lever- and pump-action rifles are now on the block.

Buy your high-capacity magazines and semi-auto rifles now. Buy as much ammo as you can, too - that's most certainly next in their sights. Fasten your seatbelts, folks; we're in for a nasty 4 years here...

That is all.

UPDATE: Forgot to add in my bleg. If you live in a free state and have any "pre-ban" magazines for the AR-15, AK-47, Sig Sauer P226 9mm, or Glock 21, I'm happy to buy you a brand new replacement magazine in exchange for the pre-ban...

I think it will be 8 years instead of 4.

"Save a Mexican drug dealer, Fist a law abiding gun owner"

The mailman dropped off 30 mags today, backordered from Nov 5th. Definitely nice to get them, but bittersweet in knowing that the chance to do it again is slipping away.

Buck,

It depends on whether the Dow stops falling and unemployment stops rising...

Wally,

If you have any spare "pre-bans" I'd be happy to take 'em off your hands for the cost of replacement...

Just sayin'...

In related news, Kirsten Gillibrand has done a 180 WRT her position on the Tiahrt amendment. See below for a link to the story. For those who don't know, Mrs. Gillibrand replaced Hillary Clinton as the junior Senator from New York. Some blue-dog dem she turned out to be. {spit}

This switch has made the likes of The Brady Bunch, Carolyn "That shoulder thing that goes up" McCarthy, Atty General Holder & others very happy. Bottom line . . . they really could get the votes to ramrod this thing.

Instapundit posted this link a few minutes ago. Could the Bitch Princess have actually done the right thing for once?

I don't buy it. Not for a second.

She's covering Holder's ass, plain and simple. They do NOT want *ANY* coverage of this, and he let it slip.

Reading Democrat Underground, MANY more than 1/2 of them think it's political suicide and about 1/3 don't want it even if they could get it.

My democrat rep from Arkansas (Mike Ross) just said this:

http://politicsinarkansas.com/2009/02/ross-says-no-to-reviving-weapons-ban/comment-page-1/#comment-959

Mike Ross to Obama: Don’t bring back the assault weapons ban.

The 4th District congressman says he doesn’t like what he’s hearing from Attorney General Eric Holder indicating the Obama administration plans to seek reinstatement of the ban that expired in 2004:

Says Ross: “Let me be clear: I will oppose any action on behalf of the Attorney General or President Obama to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004. Numerous studies have demonstrated the assault weapons ban is not an effective tool to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. Reinstating this ban would be a direct infringement on the Second Amendment right of law-abiding American citizens. I will join other pro-gun members of Congress in opposing such attempts to ban firearms.”

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban was part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act signed into law in 1994. The act defined an assault weapon to include numerous models of semi-automatic firearms that fire one shot each time the trigger is pulled. The law had a ten-year sunset provision.

Ross says firearms are an important means of self-defense, and an important part of his way of life as an avid hunter and outdoorsmen. The congressman says he’s a life member of the National Rifle Association and will continue to fight any efforts in Washington to restrict the right to own and bear arms.

Sorry, Jay... all of my magazines are definitely current-issue, so no help for you there.

I, personally, think it is coming, and it will probably be a permanent reincarnation of the previous ban, only with better verbage to cover more firearms more generally (after all, they probably learned from the mistake of specifically naming makes and models). Unfortunately, that would be the most positive prognostication I can come up with... if it comes to registration/confiscation... Urg.

Personally I'd suggest buying maybe a half-dozen Mosin-Nagant and a can of ammo for each of them. Longer reach doncha' know, and cheap enough to drop if you have to.

Anon,

I'm waiting for the one-gun-a-month rule (either state or Federal)to go that route.

Since I can get a 91/30 for about $70 and an M44 for about $90, I can pick up a new one every month without breaking the bank.

And spam can upon spam can of corrosive 7.62X54mmR goodness...

1. You're paranoid. Holder went off the reservation and Pelosi slapped him down. They aren't idiots. they remember '04

2. There are enough Blue Dog Dems in the senate to make a new AWB very difficult right now. After the 2010 mid-terms, all bets are off though

3. Doesn't matter what you think the call numbers were, the polls show your assesment as flat out BS. The vast majority of americans want a stimulus package. Skepticism over this particular package is now growing, but that's brand new (as of yesterday).
There's a distinct minority that think the plan is a bad idea.

All in all, I don't look for an AWB anytime soon. Accuse Obama of any number of things, but if you think he's stupid, you're not paying attention.

After the 2010 mid-terms is when we can expect this stuff. Til then there's people we need to bring on board that 2A is a civil rights issue, not a "conservative" issue. 2A advocates need to grasp that the GOP doesn't have a monopoly on freedom. It's up to us gun owners to convince neighbors, co-workers, friends and reporters that 2A is as important as 1A. If we'd been doing a better job of this all along we wouldn't be in this pickle now.

And what nobody's thinking about...

Yes, some form of AWB will be introduced. And it'll make the previous version look like a minor blip. But this one will have one MAJOR difference:

It won't be intended to pass.

Watch how they time introduction: it'll hit between 8 months and a year. And it'll be narrowly defeated using the "pro-gun Dems". Thus saving the Dem majority in the '10 elections.

Just out of curiosity, how would you tell a pre-ban mag from a post-ban mag? I'll be at a local dealer picking up a new toy, then off to a local range, and I can see if they have used stuff available if I know what to look for, and I can e-mail you prices, etc.
