More Crap I Don't Need...

Got a call while I was at the Cub Scout Leader's meeting tonight. On the eve of yet another snowstorm, our furnace has decided to die. Yep, no heat in the G. house tonight.

Un-fucking-real.

We moved into the house less than 10 years ago. Five years ago, almost to the day, we replaced the block in the furnace. It doesn't look like the block - last time there was water everywhere, but who knows?

AAAUUUGGGHHH!!!!

It's always something, isn't it...

That is all.

Oh man, sorry to hear you're having problems Jay. Hope you have plenty of blankets! AND a good HVAC guy on call.

The furnace that was purchased and installed (to the tune of a few thousand dollars) just a few years ago at my house... That furnace's pilot light has gone out five times in the last month.

I feel your pain. Really.

There is never a good time for your furnace to leave its mortal coil.

Had that happen in my last house, 2 years old and it crapped out on New Years Eve. No one would come by that night to look at it. The neighbors came by with firewood, wine and extra blankets. It helped. Hope tomorrow is better for you.

Get yourself some electric space heaters so your house doesn't turn into a deep freeze. The best portable heaters I've owned are made by Lasko. They are ceramic with oscillating forced air, so it'll warm a room really quickly.

Then, take "bucket showers" where you boil water on the stove in a 10 quart pot, pour it into a 5 gallon bucket and top off with cold water. The new water temp will be perfect (I should know, I've done in many times when the oil ran out and had no hot water). Then, use a plastic cup with a handle to scoop water over you. A 5 gallon bucket should last you one "shower."

Sucks, dude. Hope everything works out.

Old NFO,

HVAC people have been called. The office opens at 6, so they should be able to get in touch with a tech fairly early. We'll see...

Epi,

There's nothing cheap when it comes to HVAC, apparently. The new block was on the order of a good used car...

Brigid,

I grabbed a couple of space heaters from my folks' house next door (where we are more than welcome if this lasts any length of time). I've been arguing in favor of a woodstove insert for our (mostly decorative) fireplace for a couple of years now; perhaps something good will come of this and we'll get one in the spring...

Thanks.

I hope tomorrow's better, too. If it continues to suck I'm going to invest in bourbon... Brownest of the brown liquors...

Two words: pellet stove. I keep my furnace set at 55 degrees, yet most of my house is 70+ thanks to that thing.

Jay,

Kerosene heaters are a must in this day and time. You can probably pick one up cheap once our global warming gets found. I know MA is better prepared but winter in AL often means no electricity and thus, no heat (even if you have gas). We had to replace our whole system -- heat and air -- last year from just under 6 grand. If you need any cash, I might be talked in to buying a couple of your guns. :) J/K!
