Friday Gun Pr0n #102

Today's gun is (sadly) not a gun in the G. armory. It is, however, a firearm that I played a (small) part in the acquisition thereof. Back in September I took some new shooters to the range. Last month Dwight (the second new shooter) got his MA LTC. He immediately scored this incredible beauty:

Uberti 1866 Carbine

That's an Uberti 1866 Yellowboy carbine (19" barrel) in the very manly (and CAS appropriate) .45LC. How does it shoot? Well, I'll let Dwight give the range report:

Cold day but Elizabeth and i went to try the 1866.

Shot all the 45 I had (40 cartridges - couldn't find more.)

At 25 yards the fold down site is right on. POA = POI. Makes a very satisfying bang and a big hole.

Heh. I think that's the quote of the day: "Makes a very satisfying bang and a big hole"

Very nice rifle, Dwight. I can safely say I'm green with envy (and I will most certainly take you up on your generous offer to shoot her...). Cowboy Action Shooting is one of those "lottery" undertakings - I'd love to get a full setup, but only if I hit it big in the lottery. There's just so much nice stuff out there for CAS that I could totally see myself going a little (read: a lot) overboard.

That is all.

Jay,

Whenever you feel the urge, repeat after me . . .

Thou shalt not covet.
Thou shalt not covet.
Thou shalt not covet.

Got it? Good.

The rest of us will covet whenever the hell we feel like it. ;)

It shoots like a dream! I love it, I want one. Hell, it's the first rifle I can actually HIT what I'm AIMING at with! (Must be the stock short enough for my stubby arms.) And it doesn't kick much at all. The Mini-14 kicks more!

It's shiny, and it's nice, and when you're not feeding it crappy federal ammo (where the case is still BELLED around the bullet!) it feeds like a dream!

Aaaaargh. Want.

Actually, during a discussion with another gun geek last night, I stated that if I could only have ONE rifle and ONE handgun, I'd "settle" for a S&W 686 and a lever-action rifle (Uberti, Marlin, whatever) in .357 Mag.

Truth is: I'm not likely to go to war again in my lifetime.

- If I do, I can't hit anything past 100 yards anyway.

- At < 100 yards, the .357 mag will stop just about anything, and certainly anyONE.

So I'm free to indulge myself when it comes to guns and caliber: and the .357 Mag is a fine "do-it-all", while a lever-action rifle satisfies my old-fashioned sensibilities, and revolvers just WORK. (Oh, and I'd rather have DA than SA, because you can always shoot a DA revolver SA if you want, but not vice-versa, AND it takes less time to reload.)

So give me something from Messrs. Smith and Wesson, and a cowboy assault rifle, and I'm good to go.

Just a thought about C.A.S. and money.
They let you shoot black powder revolvers which:
1- Are less expensive than modern revolvers

2-Don't need a FFL (not sure about MA) to buy- I got mine in the mail from Cabellas

3- Look cool as h*ll and are fun, too.

KurtP: True.. but.... CAS has another money sink you're not taking into account. Costumes! HUGE money pit. But so much fun! ;)
