I was thinking... (be afraid).
Now, take something like the Mech-Tech CCU carbine:
What if Glock were to offer something like this, ready-made, using a G21 as a starting block? .45 ACP carbine, 13-15 round capacity, 16" barrel, with rail for optics and straight or folding stock? I have a feeling they literally would not be able to keep them on the shelves. I'd buy a G21 and as many 13 round magazines as I could get my grubby little mitts on if they came out with something like this for about the price of a Beretta CX4 Storm...
I suppose I could buy a G21 and a conversion kit with fixed stock. The G21 would have to be an older model to comply with MA's idiotic Approved Firearms Roster, and the fixed stock kit to comply with the MA AWB. However, this would run over $900 total - $500 - $600 for the Glock and another $300 - $350 for the Mech-Tech. A carbine selling for ~ $600 would be the bee's knees...
So what would you like to see come down the gunnie pike?
That is all.

Jay,
Why not just look for a Marlin Camp 45 carbine? You've already got a boatload of "Colt" .45acp mags which are compatible w/ the camp rifle.

Right at the moment, I'm happy to see that most of the semi-auto pistols I own can be converted to a .22lr platform. I just found a place selling conversion set ups for the Makarov 9x18 as well as .380 for roughly $200.And Remington just put out a AR styled .22lr as well, which looks fairly affordable. Until this ammo shortage thing clears up, all I can shoot in any volume is .22lr. without draining my ammo cache to unacceptable levels.
I do wish that someone would focus on pistol caliber carbines that would accept highcap magazines of the more popular models.
I thought I saw a few G21s at Four Seasons the other day. Suprisingly their stock is quite low, but the Glock wall still looks nice.
I KNOW I saw a G20 there. Now THAT would make a BITCHEN Carbine. I know you want compatability with your G30, but 10mm Auto out of a 16" BBL with a shoulder-stock seems like a VERY VERY nice medium-powered cartridge...
Goes double if you wanted to handload some 10mm up to better use the longer barrel with a slower-burning powder...
Yessir, Weer'd Beard, that little Devil on Jay's Shoulder!
What about the Kel-Tec Sub 2000? No 45 ACP version sadly, but they have 9mm and 40SW versions for most popular hi-cap pistol mags.
I wpould luv to see a SIG carbine in 40 that took 226 magazines. But than again, I am biased.
Brad,
If Marlin still made the Camp Carbine I'd be all over one. However, since it's out of production, I'm leery of dropping $500 - $600 (or more) on a gun that's known to have problems with breaking parts and springs and stuff.
And we can't get high capacity mags for it here in MA, either...
anguslincoln,
I hear you on the .22 conversions. I'm going to order one for my G30 and my Colt 1911 once the smoke clears from the Disney trip. They have the added advantage of being useful in my gun club's indoor range...
Weer'd,
10mm is in the same category as .44 Magnum in the list of "calibers Jay will start shooting only after he gets set up to reload...
I like it; don't get me wrong, it's just that right now it's prohibitively expensive...
zeeke42,
See, that's it. There's plenty of 9mm and .40 S&W carbines out there - heck, for under $300 I could get the Hi-Point 9mm *and* the Beretta Storm-like stock for it.
But I want a .45 ACP carbine, consarn it!
Sigboy,
Make it 9mm and I'll buy one too...
I have a boatload of glock mags but see no real joy in the mehtech. But Jay, why not get a .45 upper for your AR ???
As to .22s, I've been dithering with getting another ruger Mk2, but prices have risen $100 since the ammo shortage has become an issue.
IIRC the S2000 Kel-Tek DOES take Sig 226 mags (Or glock mags, depending on what model you take)
Either in 9x19 or 10mm S&W Special.
I've shot 9mm carbines, and the little Europellet has much more authority from a 16" barrel. The 40 S&W carbines, same story, just moreso. I think a 10mm would be just about perfect.
That said, I own a Marlin 1894 in 38/357 and it's everything I wanted and then some. Who says the carbine needs to be semi-auto?
Wally,
What's the availability of pre-ban high-capacity magazines for .45 ACP AR uppers?
I already OWN several pre-ban G21 magazines. The G21-based carbine would be similar to the G21 I would get as a full-size and the G30 I own and carry...
Weer'd,
I'll have to look into that, then, because I have a shitload of pre-ban 226 9mm mags...
Rick,
Don't get me wrong. A nice Marlin 1894 in .38/.357 is on the list...
The Glock-based carbine would allow crossover between carry gun and carbine, though...
Lever gun, not so much... :)
I'm sorry, but the Lord made that as ugly as He could, and then kicked it in the face.
How about a nice M1A1 semi-automatic repro? Nice furniture to go with that .45 ACP.
Jay,
All of the convesrions are based on stupid-common magazines. There are 9mm conversions out there using sten, glock, or uzi mags, and 45 conversions with greasegun or thompson mags, stick and drum. There are also 40SW and 357Sig conversions out there but I'm not really familiar with them.
IIRC the glock mags require a special lower but preban G18 mags are trough to find. Thompson drums require mods to a stock lower. Sten/uzi/GG/thompson stick can all run in a stock lower with an adapter.
I went 9mm, uzi style, and looooove it. 10 round groups in 2.5" at 50 yards - with a puny 5" barrel (legally a pistol, but would be just as fun with a 16" barrel) It's an absolute hoot to run. 100% guaranteed that it will put a large smile on your face. Strangers will walk up to you and ask "Did Washington just fall off of Delaware and sink to the bottom of the ocean?" and you'll be all like "nope, better, I just shot this wikked pissah AR" :)
I don't know...
If I were to go that route, I think I'd pick up one of these.

Meh.
I've shot one of the Thompson repros.
It's heavy and unreliable using anything other than the AutoOrdnance mags.
I'd much rather have a light polymer carbine that took existing magazines, especially ones that fit my carry gun...
Go for the CCU if you already have a G21 or a 1911 to spare.
I have had a CCU for over 4 years, it is now on my old Essex 1911-a1 and I love it. Just about ready to break down and convert it to the collapsible wire stock, and maybe buy a few more doo-dads to adorn the rails.
I also have a G21 that I am not very fond of and have been thinking of turning it into a semi-permanent carbine, but that would not satisfy the common-magazine issue.
I had a Marlin camp-45. Nice but not something I would trust my life on - That is why it is an early inheritance present to my son.
