Idea!

Bandying about ideas on how to fix the political process in Gun Nuts chat, I came up with the following idea:
Each politician should have to wear a suit with his major donors like NASCAR racers

Think about it. Think about how it might change perceptives to know that Politician A supports Cause X... And just happens to have Business B who is a major benefactor of Cause X money...

That is all.

Nah! They should be tattooed with the names of the donors and forced to parade naked on election day.

I like it!
And to make it as even as possible at the start of the campaign season...the base garment should be an orange prison jumpsuit.

Me likie. I get the feeling that they'd all really turn out to be like Captain Amazing from "Mystery Men".

The problem is that you'll still never know whether the chicken or the egg came first.

Does the politician support the cause because donors who support him will profit?

Or do the donors support the politician because the politician already supports a cause that will profit them?

Doesn't it make sense for special interest groups to donate to politicians who support their causes? It'd be kind of silly for them to help politicians that work directly against their interests wouldn't it?

Should the NRA financially support Boxer, Pelosi, Kennedy et al?

Should the politicians they DO support be removed from office because they vote in favor of policies that their donors support?

Under these standards, the only way any politician could ever sustain any semblance of objectivity is by not accepting any donations at all...which means he'd never be in office in the first place and, therefore, it would be a moot point.

I suppose we could advocate outlawing all corporate and special interest political donations...but, not only would you be hard pressed to find politicians willing to support the the slaying of the Goose that lays the Golden Eggs, but I can guarantee that it would be just as ineffectual as every other "campaign finance" legislation ever passed.
