Beer choice at Obama meeting touches off new debate
(CNN) — The upcoming White House meeting with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and the Cambridge police officer who arrested him earlier this month appears to have touched off a fresh debate all on its own: what kind of beer should be served?
Earlier this week the White House indicated each man would drink the beer of their choice — Bud Light for President Obama, Blue Moon for the police officer, and perhaps Red Stripe or Beck's for Gates.
(emphasis mine) Seriously, Bud Light? Dude! I quit drinking that when I got out of college and had money to spend on real beer. Bud Mud is the best 0bama can do? Honestly? It's especially surprising when you recall who sits on the Board of Directors for Anheiser-Busch...
The article makes a good albeit specious point, that the three beers chosen for the event are all foreign-owned or based (A-B is owned by a Belgian consortium; Red Stripe is Jamaican, and Blue Moon is Canadian). They point to Boston's own Sam Adam's as an American company that could have been chosen, and point to other local, American brews that could have been chosen. Personally, I would have gone with something from NH-based Red Hook, but that's just me...
I did have to chuckle at this line, though:
Dan Kenary, president of Harpoon Brewery, told the paper they are working every "back-door channel" the company has.
Apparently he read yesterday's headline of the day...
That is all.

The fact that beer must be served at this meeting is a gaffe in itself.
All the times when I've presented beer to people it was just an offer of hospitality.
If I'm apologizing I offer my hand and a sincere apology.
We know the prez will offer his hand because he KNOWS both parties will take it, and there will be cameras to capture it, but an apology? I'd say that will be less likely than me dumping 20 rounds of 7.62X39 from your veper without changing mags this weekend.
Be interesting to see if Obama and Gates will be able to keep their racist jargon in check while the cameras are rolling. I bet they can, I have my doubts they will.
The offer of sharing a beer is his attempt to pass himself off as "just like you and me".
It only goes to show how desperate he is to curry favor and how much of his view of the "common man" comes from his own bigoted stereotypes.
That's the same reason he chose "Bud Light". Does anyone really believe that that's what we would find in his glass on a normal evening? BS. His choice was based on nothing more than the fact that Bud Light is the best selling beer in the US?
He's trying to pass himself off as "just like you and me" in a very ham=handed, transparent and obviously insincere way.
Just the fact that this escalated into an issue where he feels that he NEEDS to put on a show to appease the "masses" demonstrates how badly he stepped in it with his ridiculous comment and exactly how unprepared for this job he really was (and is).
Just the fact that this poseur actually made it to the White House speaks volumes as to how far and how fast the once great United States Of America has fallen.
And I don't hold out much hope for an epiphany any time soon. Too many generations have been indoctrinated in public schools to reverse the trend. It's only a matter of time.
Sorry for being so cynical. I just gotta call it as I see it.
Weerd,
The fact that this is even HAPPENING is a gaffe, IMHO...
(The VEPR's a .308, BTW. If it were a 7.62X39mm I could get mags for it...)
:)
Sailorcurt.
Please, continue. I'll let you know when I see something I have even the slightest hint of disagreement with...
I'm a fan of Rahrs, local brew. Good stuff with a bunch of choices, the Southern Sam Adams if you will (Shiners can suck it). Their Ugly Pug is good, and goes with pretty much everything.
I'm honestly not surprised The One drinks piss water beer, though.
I went to school in Missouri, and someone tried to debate me when I informed him that Bud was in no way the best beer in the world. Worse than arguing with hippies.
If Obama had ordered something from Magichat or Dogfish Head I'd have been impressed. Even a Guinness would have been a fine choice.
On another note, Miller and Coors must be pissed.
Just for the record Blue Moon is brewed by the fake "Blue Moon Brewing Co." which is actually Coors Brewing (which had/has a partnership with Molson)which is now MillerCoors (after a join venture last year between Molson Coors Brewing Co and SAB Miller).
All of the companies mentioned are publicly traded so its kind of a moot point. All the beer is still brewed in the USA and all the companies have large workforces here. (With the exception of Becks which is imported)
Rock Bottom Brewery in Bethesda, MD has one of my favorite beers (brown bear brown), and all of their offerings are excellent; it's also lot closer to the whitehouse than St. Louis.
FYI, the budweiser distributorship outside of Chicago is owned by one of Jesse Jackson's sons (or, two, I can't recall). No, they had no experience, no, they had no collateral. Their dad shook down the company & they were given the business (true story).
I gotta say that I developed a taste for Bud Light. The reason is the same that I learned how to use vi. Vi is on every Unix system in the galaxy and Bud Light is in every 'fridge in FL...
Ah, I like cheap-ass watery beer. I can down a case and still mow the lawn!
Might be some Billy Beer left in a basement somewhere in the White House. Can't get more American than that.

Sailorcurt, I'll just follow along behind you & nod. You said exactly what I think about the whole mess.
And since we're talking beer, make mine Shiner, of course.
Bud and Bud Light have their purposes. I cook with them. Bratwurst is great cooked in beer. I marinade tri-tip with it.
For drinking I prefer the darker Sam Adams stock or a Smoked Porter from the Stone Brewery in San Diego.
But if I was the cop at this party i wouldn't be at the party. My response would have been "Sorry I'm busy with my kids that day. Besides I only drink with people I like and respect and neither person at that party fits either one of those criteria."
Gates insulted the cop in front of his fellow officers and the neighborhood. The president insulted him in front of the entire nation. If either of them want to apologize that is where they should do it.
0bama now wants to work with insurance companies to cut down on medical costs by getting rid of the sick and elderly with his proposed death panels. Democrat liberals now believe they have a backdoor to the death panels through private insurance companies. One strategy that is being implemented by insurance companies use the idea of "pre-existing" conditions, that in some way or form you had the condition before you got insurance, and thus you are ineligible for treatment. Another strategy is the usage of calling treatment plans "experimental", and thus covering or treating you becomes too risky. If you don't want your sick grandmother or your little cousin with leukemia to be deemed "just too risky" to save, then please pass this on.
