Stupid Hurts...

Man badly hurt in jump-start accident
A 48-year-old Quincy man was seriously injured when he was run over by a van yesterday morning in Dorchester while attempting to jump-start his vehicle.

The victim was in the backyard of a friend’s house on Sydney Street, where the two men were attempting to jump-start one car with a van.

So, what happened, you ask. Did a faulty battery explode? Wires not properly connected? Perhaps a short in one of the cars' electrical systems?

Oh no. This was a case of stupid, plain and simple:
Police said his friend apparently did not realize the van was in gear and hit the victim, smashing through a wooden fence and pushing the victim more than 20 feet into an adjacent backyard. They said the driver backed up in an effort to free the victim, but ran over him, causing serious head injuries.

Okay. Review the mistakes made:

1. Jump-starting a vehicle using a running car. This isn't too bad; it's not recommended generally to use a running car, but it's been done;
2. Forgetting to put the running car in Park. Yeah, this is a dumb one, and I say this as someone who once got out of his car with the car still in gear and running, so...;
3. Backing over the guy he just ran over.

One has to wonder if perhaps the theme to Benny Hill were playing in the background, or, more likely, if malt liquor were involved...

Someone really ought to submit this duo to FAILBlog.

That is all.

Yep, stoopid enough here to go around.
However, it is best to use a running vehicle for the jump feed, especially if there may be some serious cranking going on; otherwise, you could end up with TWO dead vehicles.
Just make sure the final ground connection is to the car frame, not a battery post…
