Any thoughts on a printer/scanner/copier for under $100? Mrs. G. just called to our ancient HP finally kicked it. Not looking for anything fancy, just something that can scan and copy at a reasonable rate. Looking for something in the ~ $100 or less range, which these days buys you a helluva lot more printer than ever before. Also very interested in hearing what not to buy...
Thoughts/comments/etc. are appreciated.
That is all.

I picked up a cheap HP at Sam's Club for about $60. Does all three things well.

HP has stuff dirt cheap. I got the printer/copier/scanner thing for $100 about 2 years ago & it works great. Of course, the printer isn't the cost, it's the freaking INK...
But, yeah, go with HP if you can. I think ours is the 1200, but I'm going off memory.
HP 4315v , under $60 at wallyworld all the time. Price may have gone up slightly since but still printer, scanner, copyier, fax all in one.
Don't buy a Lexmark. POS!
And way expensive ink.
I got an HP Deskjet F4235 printer/scanner/copier combo at Walmart a couple days ago for a grand whopping $37. Replacement ink cartridges are all of $5 each. It immediately went into use and it's been a charm thus far.
HP makes good stuff, all-around.
I recommend writing everything by hand and getting a Milt Sparks Versa Max II
LMAO!
I have the greatest commenters in the fucking world, I really do...
Definitely recommend separating the tasks. Added complexity of multi-function devices adds to cost and what do you do if one function quits? You end up replacing the whole thing.
For a printer, I recently bought a Canon, the decision was based on a PC Magazine article about ink costs. This printer has better cost per page ratios, due to lower ink prices, and retailed for $79.00.
and +1 for PopNFresh.
I bought an HP ink jet at CostCo. My cost over $300 since I was tired of printer problems and thought that cheaping out may have been the cause. The printer works fine, but the software is a pain in the ass. It continually wants to update itself. If there is any little error anywhere, it may refuse to print without any way to see what problem needs to be corrected. Of course, maybe all brands are like that, nowadays.

Although HP makes good printers, I've never much liked the company's anti 2A stance. If I can find an alternative product I do. I've had good luck with Canon printers.
I consider all consumer printers to be disposable. If they work past the first ink/toner change you're doing good.
My parents have a Canon that they love. It does beautiful pics, I'd definitely recommend it, I can probably get the model later tonight. As for myself I'm saving up for a commercial grade HP laserjet.
If you're getting a color inkjet, I'd recommend the kind with individual color cartridges. At least when you run low of green or some other color, you don't have to spend 40 freakin' bucks on a new all-in-one ink cartridge.
I say go for the all-in-ones unless you have the desk space to have a printer, a scanner and a copier sitting around.
HP is good, roger the gripe on the updates thingamajigger.
Maybe spend a little more and get one with network capabilities. Depends on your needs though. -Rumson
Avoid Kodak like a plague. Best Buy says we need to use it more and showed my laser printers. But I need the scanner/copier function. Our Kodak keeps running out of ink without printing. Not sure if it's evaporating or drying up or pissed cause we don't use it much. I have a Canon MP470 at work I love but I also use it like 200 times a day.
I went with a Cannon Copier/Scanner/Printer. I got it at Office Depot for about 79.00
The kids and I are happy with it. It prints photos pretty good, and it does good on all the kids school work. The ink cartridges are a better price if you buy them at wally whirl.
Hmmm. It sounds like HP is still the way to go. I've been warned by more than a couple of people about Lexmark (from GBC: "It's the Lorcin of printers!")
It looks like there are several HP models available in my price range; we'll see basically what we can get at Best Buy (we have like $30 in gift cards). Figure I'll go with whatever takes the cheapest print cartridges...
As far as getting separate items, that's a solid idea in general, but we're looking for a smallish printer/scanner/copier we can stick with the laptop in the kitchen area. If there's sophisticated scanning/copying that needs to be done, there are other options...
Alan brings up an excellent point, too - most everyday printers are running between $50 and $100, with print cartridges costing $25 or so. It does pretty much make the printer a disposable item.
Which is good, because they make very satisfying reactive targets... :D
Should be picking something up this afternoon/evening or tomorrow morning. We'll see!
And thanks everyone for your thoughts and suggestions!
Canon MX-310.
I've had it with HP's crappy planned obsolescence and having to buy a new printer every few years (not to mention the bloatware that comes with each HP), so I changed to a Canon.
So far, I love it. AND it's under that $100 pricepoint you mentioned.
@EmmaPeel - Would like to find out more about your Kodak experience - can you email me at connect@kodak.com ?'
the cost is in the ink!
and HP stink
now a canon
nothing rhymes with Canon
oh bugger
