The glow from a health care triumph faded quickly for President Barack Obama on Sunday as Democrats realized the bill they fought so hard to pass in the House has nowhere to go in the Senate. And the trophy for this year's Tortured Metaphor Class goes to...
Speaking from the Rose Garden about 14 hours after the late Saturday vote, Obama urged senators to be like runners on a relay team and "take the baton and bring this effort to the finish line on behalf of the American people."
Two quotes of note in this article:
If a government plan is part of the deal, "as a matter of conscience, I will not allow this bill to come to a final vote," said Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Connecticut independent whose vote Democrats need to overcome GOP filibusters.
Ah, good ol' Joe Lieberman. Still think he looks like the dad on "ALF", but I'm glad he's on our side. And a little pissed off at the Democratic party, from the looks of things...
And the second quote:
"The House bill is dead on arrival in the Senate," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said dismissively.
Music, sweet music...
That is all.

I hope to god they are right....
If they defeat it I'd personally buy every Senator who voted "NO" a beer if given the chance.
I couldn't be happier to hear that.
I was heading off to the range today to blow off steam about the bill. Looks like I will be shooting to celebrate instead.
Red letter day. Good news, and Lindsay Graham said something that DIDN'T make me want to beat him with a 2X4
Jay, and you believe a word these people say?
I believe them as far as I can throw a Kennedy over the Charles River.
Shootin' Buddy
I'm with Mike W. I bet we can get the right shit-faced on our appreciative nickles!
Phew I thought I was the only one. ... who thought Lieberman could be the twin of the guy from ALF.
But I'll believe it when I see it.
I dunno, Anonymous. To get Joe Lieberman's support, the Dems would have to offer something fairly substantial.
The word is that he was plenty, plenty pissed over them trying to throw him under the bus, and I have a feeling he's going to make their lives VERY interesting -- at least until many of them lose their 2010 elections.
Hi wally ...
you are not only one who thought Lieberman could be the twin of the guy from ALF. i also...thought it...and i believe it..
The way I understand it, the House votes on House bills, the Senate on Senate bills. When a bill passes the House, the Senate does not vote on the House bill, they vote on the Senate version. Then they go to conference to see what (if anything) can be done to reconcile the two.
So for a senator to say the House bill is DOA in the Senate is technically meaningless - House bills verbatim don't go to a vote in the Senate.
