SALEM — A Beverly man has been sentenced to up to 3½ years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a Peabody boy numerous times when he was between the ages of 6 and 8.Got that? "Up to" 3½ years. This man destroyed a child's life and will most likely not even serve two years in prison for it. This is how the state of Massachusetts handles dangerous criminals - slap 'em on the wrist, wag your finger, and let 'em out the revolving door. Here's the kicker. If I were to pick up a 12 round magazine manufactured in 1995 at a gun show, I would serve a five year prison term. Think about that for a second.
Prosecutors called the actions of 31-year-old Shawn Finnegan "despicable, horrific and unimaginable" in Salem Superior Court on Monday.
Here's how MA views crimes:
- Own a "banned" high capacity magazine: Five years in jail.
- Molest a young child: Three and a half years in jail.
That is all.

Over in Saudi Arabia, they are beheading and crucifying a child rapist.
This kid could not have had a father around. It never would have gone on this long and the guy never would have made it to trial alive.
Remember: this is the state from which Gary Studds and Barney Frank got elected in, do the math.
Hold on a second. While I'm 100% with JayG on this, suggesting that "gay people = child rape" is pretty fucking stupid, Steven.
Doesn't particularly surprise me that priorities are whacked in MA. I agree that it's still outrageous when you compare particulars.
The rate of pedophilia is comparable between homosexual and heterosexual adults. I don't believe that a tolerance for homosexual behavior encourages child molestation, and I do feel that it says more about Steven than about homosexuals that he thinks so.
I can't agree with Saudi Arabia's system - hanging up dead bodies is just unhygienic;)
My mind works in strange things. When you did the math with the 12 round magazine, all I could think was: "So you should use the magazine to kill a child rapist. That should get you out earlier, right?"
Then I realized that that would only work in a place where they had some sense. Carry on.
Ahab - Gary Studds was censured by the U.S. Congress for the statutory rape of a male page.
Bob: Hopefully not in that order. I mean, the crucifixion loses something if the guy isn't alive to enjoy it.
Ahab: I figured Steven just meant that the people of MA were whacked-out enough to send that crew to congress. But he left out Teddy Kennedy, so... *shrug*

As someone else noted, you forgot Teddy. He may be dead, but that only adds to the manner in which he stinks.
If there is a God, Teddy is certainly not with him.
Bob S. beat me to it. Makes converting sound like pretty good. If they had crucified him first, then beheaded him, I'd be out shopping for a burka for the wife right now...
Oh, and one more thing. FLEE MASSACHUSETTS! Flee like your hair is on fire. Your taxes are paying for the very policies that you despise. Come south. The first range visit is on me.
One question:
Is that "five years for possessing a hi-cap mag" a minimum, a maximum, or mandatory?
I know MANY people here in Oz who "forgot" to hand in their hi-cap mags when the government of the day ordered that they be confiscated.
I have never seen a report of anybody charged with ONLY that offense - it is always added to a laundry list of other stuff, and typically attracts no additional penalty (although it might influence the judge at sentencing time, who can tell).
Whisky Tango Foxtrot, over! Seriously, what the frak is wrong with Mass?
I think Texas is on the right track:

"Gary Studds was censured by the U.S. Congress for the statutory rape of a male page."
Is censure more or less severe than a "disapproving look"?
My weblink got cut off, it was a link to a story about the 4,060 year sentance given to a child molester in Texas. That sounds about right, especially once his fellow inmates know about him.
And then there is South Carolina which just sentenced a man to 3 years for having sex with a horse. Three years for a kid in MA, 3 for a horse in SC. I haven't got that figured out yet, not sure I want to.......

I'm grasping at straws here, trying to find the silver lining on this thunderstorm here.
At least the guy with the high capacity mag will probably be alive to walk out of prison one day. The pedo? Not so likely.
"At least the guy with the high capacity mag will probably be alive to walk out of prison one day. The pedo? Not so likely."
We can only hope so.
Which prison is he being sent to? What is his number?
Who is the head honcho amongst the prisoners, and when exactly are visiting hours?
It's stuff like this that really points out to the bad guys on where one can go for a target-rich environment.
I swear, you'd have a hard time convincing me that MA isn't deliberately making the Commonwealth safer for criminals.
God Bless Texas.

Child molesters are viewed more sympathetically than gun owners in more places than just Massachusetts.
It has to be second offense possession of an unregistered high capacity magazine before you can get sent away for longer than molesting children.
By the way: the claim that homosexuals and heterosexuals molest children at equal rates is not true. A variety of studies completed before this became too un-PC a topic to consider found a range of 20% to 30% of child molesters were homosexual and bisexual. Since gay men are about 3% to 4.5% of the male population, this is a rather dramatic disproportion.
