Friday Gun Pr0n #141

Yesterday I said there was a new addition to the G. armory. I'd hinted about being on the prowl for a new gun a while back, given that I'd divested of a safe queen recently and was looking for something to take its place. Well, last week I found that something, and this past Tuesday I picked her up:

Colt 1991A1 Compact

I finally found an Officer's model 1911! This is the first non-Government sized 1911-style gun I own; the little brother to the 1991A1 I've mentioned previously. It's got a 3½" barrel, 6 or 7 round capacity, with a shortened slide and frame for concealed carry. The locking mechanism is slightly different than a government model, in that the barrel bushing is removed after the slide is taken off the frame rather than before; otherwise it's the same manual of arms as the full size.

I brought it along on Tuesday when I tested the LaserLyte sights, and at 25' feet this gun is amazingly accurate; at least as accurate as any other 3" barreled gun I own. It's got a good heft to it; perhaps a little on the heavy side for concealed carry but with a good belt and holster certainly doable. It will accept full-sized magazines, so the 8- or 10- round magazines for the Gold Cup can serve as back-up mags.

So... What's a good holster for an officer's model 1911?

That is all.

Jay,

You need to have as a friday pic a colt-fest . . . how 'bout the made in 1917 1911 with the gold cup with this newest addition? John Moses Browning (PBUH) would be proud.

Pure class.

Breda's gonna be jealous!

is the frame Alloy or Steel, and what does it tip the scales at?

I use a Crossbreed SuperTuck for my clone. Very comfy and easily accessible for my all-steel gun.

Brad,

The first pic I want to talk with this addition will be with its bigger brother, the government-framed 1991A1.

I can see a 1911-fest Friday pic too...

Borepatch,

Thanks.

You know it's available to shoot if'n you want, right?

Weerd,

It's a steel frame, so it's pretty heavy. I fully intend to do another Glock vs. 1911 post with this one!

sv,

Thanks for the recommendation. I carry my G30 in a Crossbreed Supertuck, actually, and know how comfortable they are...

You're welcome. Actually, I use the SuperTuck for all my 1911s. It's always the same, just the gun changes.

I've been carrying a Springfield MicroCompact in a Don Hume clip-on IWB for over 7 years now:

They also make a matching clip-on magazine carrier.

I like having the cocked-and-locked thumb-break; it's sort of like a third safety. I've had a few 1911 holsters where the thumb-safety has rubbed into the "off" position; a little disconcerting when you remove the holster from your belt.

I knew it! :)

In leather, I really like the Galco Royal Guard. It's horsehide with the rough side out and smooth inside. Or Galco’s Summer Comfort holster made of premium saddle leather.

I also like their USA models for smaller guns are pretty decent.

I haven't really found a kydex holster that I didn't like.

1911A1? Check
.45acp? Check
Full size and compact? Check and check.
Life is good. All face Ogden and bow.

As I recall I had a Bianchi hi-ride holster that worked well for me in anything other than a tight shirt.

Something similar is here:

I'd like to get another officer's model sometime but my main CCW choice now would be my 1911 or snubby depending on the situation/weather.

Lose those wraparound grips and get some dressy wood.

Actually, the instructions that came with mine (LO those many years ago) called for the plug to be depressed, then the bushing rotated and removed. Then the plug is rotated and removed...

Mine pretty much lives in a Milt Sparks VM2
