A 1928 Cadillac thought to have belonged to the notorious Chicago mobster Al Capone will be auctioned Friday in California. Expected to sell for about $500,000, the car is also believed to be the oldest surviving bulletproof automobile.
Anyone got a spare half-million kicking around? Darn... I mean, just how damn cool is this car? First off, it's owned by Al Capone, the archetypal gangster. Brought down by the IRS for tax evasion (one of the earliest examples of governmental overreach...); immortalized in countless movies; the original tough guy; Al Capone set the standard for mafioso for the next 50 years. Secondly, it's a 1928 Cadillac in pristine condition - that alone is worth the price of admission. And of course, it's bulletproof. How cool is that?
*sigh* Hey, a guy can dream, right?
That is all.

If you buy one, you've got to get a couple Thompsons and BARs to go with it.
"... thought to have belonged to the notorious Chicago mobster Al Capone..."
What, they don't know for sure?
"bulletproof" is not a statement, it's a challenge.
Wolf..
Auction Company speak for "They can't actually prove it for sure, but thay have some doumentation." Provenance is very important for cars like this and the record keeping at the time was spotty at best, and frequently lost. There's more than one documented "Al Capone's Caddy" because he owned more than one and there was more than one guy in Illinos named Al Capone.
This weekend is the big weekend for Auctions in Monterey --- Lots of neat cars for sale. take a look at http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/55b81963#/55b81963/1
....if you really want to see what you can get if you have a couple of million to spend
Trenchcoat and Fedora?
I trust you have those?
And baseball bat?
Wood!!
Not some stinking aluminum bat!!
Need that stuff to accessorize!!
Is that the right word? Accessorize?
Oh, man, that is one pretty car. Style on wheels. Right color, and everything. If I but had the means...
And I really don't even care much about the Capone connection, even. Though I'd probably keep a gallon or two of Canadian whiskey in the trunk just for authenticity's sake, y'understand.:-D
Bulletproof? Cool! I've always wanted a car that would absolutely, never, ever, suffer a breakdown!

I thought Capone's car became the first Presidental armored car.
Coulda had more than one I guess.
Fess up, you just want something cool to impress everyone at the next Zootshoot. But to go along with zeeke42, don't forget the 1911's in .38 Super, the Pearl Handle Detective Specials and Bonnie Parker's Sawed-Off Browning (PBUH) Auto-5.
that is pretty BAMF... but I just don't know if it'd keep your daughter's potential suitors away... or attract them.
Any suitor who would be summarily impressed by Al Capone's Cadillac would be allowed to date my daughter at least once...
Someone with taste that discriminating deserves a shot.
And besides, if I could afford that car I could afford a full auto Thompson to go with it...
