Scary With A Side Order of Infuriating...

Remember, you can't professionalize until you Federalize, folks...

TSA prompts review after flight school arrests in Stow

STOW, Mass. -- An investigation is taking off, after dozens of alleged illegal immigrants were arrested in connected with a flight school in Massachusetts.

The flight school, TJ Aviation, rents space from the airfield and has a bustling Brazilian business. Whether the students were illegal wasn’t the issue, but the hole in the government's anti-terrorism safety net is.

This is a story written for one of the major network affiliates in Boston, folks. The grammar - and usage - doesn't get any better for the rest of the (mercifully short) story, including this gem:
"They had specifically asked the representatives of the flight school if they could do this and not run a file of the law," said William Joyce, who represents some of those arrested.
Boy, wouldn't that hurt, running a file of the law? I'll bet it's worse than running afoul of the law, that's for certain...

Okay, snarky criticism aside, what has aroused my ire about this story is the simple fact that at the same time the TSA can't decide if it wants to fondle us or view us nekkid, they're ignoring their own edicts to disallowing illegals from taking flying lessons. My wife might get a free trip to gropesville in the name of "security", but Achmed the terrorist can waltz into the country and learn how to crash fly a 747 even against TSA policy.

That "S" don't stand for Security, folks, it stands for Shibboleth...

That is all.

Story sent to me by PISSED, who has just insured I will not be flying to DC in April...

Well... I'd have to say it actually stands for "schmuck", myself. Since I know the origin of the word "shibboleth" and all.

Well, I went with the Merriam-Webster definition 1a:

"A word or saying used by adherents of a party, sect, or belief and usually regarded by others as empty of real meaning"

"Security" in the context of the Transportation Security Agency would fit that to a "T", no?

The Brazilians know all too well that punishment for immigration enforcement is meted out by a toothless tiger. I don't blame them for risking a misdemeanor immigration violation in exchange for training that will help them get a steady middle-class job back home.

TSA is just another bag of smashed assholes in the dripping sack that is the Ministry Of Love, or DHS for short. In the maritime trades, there's a strong call to break the DHS back into their individual organizations, so that at least some of them can be less incompetent. Nothing lowers the bar than putting career hacks in charge of federal organizations.

So glad I don't have to fly Commercial anymore. Rather take the extra day or two and drive to my destination. With all the extra hours spent on check-in to get past security, flight cancellations, sitting on the tarmac, it's gotten to the point that it's actually cheaper and faster for me to drive anywhere in a 600 mile circle from my house rather than fly. Beyond that, I'll think I'd rather ride Greyhound. At least the seats are wider with more leg room!

My old unit was sucked into DHS.
How bad is it?
Quote from officer "I wish I was back on the DC police force."
That's bad!

DHS was a good idea with a lousy execution. Sort of like the Chrysler K cars. Combining a bunch of federal agencies, often with competing agendas, into one super agency just means that there will be more infighting and competition for resources. Combining some agencies, Border Patrol and Customs, makes sense, but combining others doesn't.

The TSA is a bad idea with an even worse execution. It matters not if they are union or non union, civil service or non civil service. When you give that much power to poorly trained bottom rung employees, they are going to abuse it. It just makes it worse that supervisors blindly support even the most stupid of decisions by the line staff. The IGs office should be there to investigate employees, not bully tax payers.

I'm with Bubblehead. If I can drive it in a day, I won't fly if I don't have to.
