So, is this the new "swamp gas reflected off a weather balloon"? I think most of us saw the video footage from the LA-based traffic camera. That didn't look like any jet contrail I've ever seen in all of my 39 years on this planet - that looked like a missile plain and simple. The "official" line is that the news station altered the footage to make it look faster; that it was a jet contrail and not a missile launch; yet there have been no reports of airplanes in that area. It would seem to be a trivial matter to pull the flight records, match the area to a plane in the vicinity, and put this to rest.Los Angeles, California (CNN) -- The Pentagon is unable to explain images of what witnesses took to be a high-altitude rocket launched off the coast of southern California at sunset Monday, officials said.
But John Pike, a defense expert who is director of GlobalSecurity.org, said he believes he has solved the mystery.
"It's clearly an airplane contrail," Pike said Tuesday afternoon. "It's an optical illusion that looks like it's going up, whereas in reality it's going towards the camera. The tip of the contrail is moving far too slowly to be a rocket. When it's illuminated by the sunset, you can see hundreds of miles of it ... all the way to the horizon.
Maybe it is just an optical illusion and it really is just a jet contrail - but the way the government has handled this has all the earmarks of something else. The Navy and Air Force have issued statements disavowing any missile launches. The FAA has been absolutely silent on any plane activity. And even wild claims that this was some sort of super secret foreign submarine-based ICBM don't have anyone stepping forward to claim responsibility - if this were something from China or elsewhere, wouldn't someone be taking credit for breaching the US perimeter?
In any case, it's certainly a case-study in how not to handle a UFO...
That is all.

Anybody know if "Mythbusters" was taping in the area?
US Airways flight 808 contrail. We'll see it again tonite.
I've witness hundreds of missile launches from military test ranges as part of my job.
If that The spasmodic flame patten was coming from any aircraft I was on, I'd be jumping out the door.
There was far too much billowing of particulate matter for aircraft exhaust, far more typical of rocket plume.
Aircraft DO NOT launch vertically straight out of the ocean, with the velocity and trajectory of a ballistic missile.
I'm leaning more towards a Iranian dry run of a "One Second After" scenario.
My advice: Prepare now.
Okay, let's say it IS a contrail. And the Pentagon can't explain it??!! Why didn't they just say "It's a contrail."?
Explain this then.

@Anonymous:
Did they say Missile? They meant Miss Isle, she was on the plane. She has a nasty temper, and they fired her while she was on her flight. As you can understand, she didn't take it well.
I just bought 30 rolls of Reynolds Wrap..I'm prepared!
I'm betting on a missile. Fired by the Chinese.
A Jihadist group would have fired it toward the US. They don't mess around with threats--they just try to destroy Western civilization. So that leaves out al-Qaida or similar organizations.
One could suspect North Korea, but they'd have claimed credit for it immediately. "Yeah, bitches, that's right...whose house? Kim-Jong's house!"
The Chinese, however, possess not only the technology to get within sight of our coast and bust off a warning shot, but the motivation to do so. When they started lending us money, they told us--in so many words--"Do not dishonor our investment."
We have. We treated China like our own personal ATM, and now we're monetizing our debt, ie; devaluing their investment in our country. If I were the Chinese, I'd be pissed off about that too. So, though this is simply a guess, I'd say China sent us a Don't Fuck With Us wake-up call.
If this were a missile, which we know it wasn't. Because Da Gubmint said so.
It was a jet contrail from a plane coming from Hawaii. The camera picked it up from the unique perspective of looking into a hazy horizon with the sun setting. The reason the contrail looks so big is that A) the plane was moving relatively slowly (for a jet) and B) winds were spread the contrail. FYI contrails are mostly water vapor, not particulate matter from engines.
