More Rimfire Goodness

My latest review is up at Guns, Holsters, and Gear.

Today's article is a review of the Smith & Wesson 22A-1 rimfire pistol. It's Smith & Wesson's entry level answer to the Ruger Mark III/Browning Buckmark Camper, a low-price gun that doesn't skimp on performance. I thoroughly enjoyed shooting this little pistol, and liked it so much that I may just pay it the ultimate compliment - I think I'm going to add one to the G. armory.

Is .22 pistol. Is good.

That is all.

Great article. Though I'd love to know how easy it is clean compared to a Ruger Mark III or Browning Buckmark.

Any thoughts on reviewing a Beretta Neos? It also has the long integrated rail and seems to be aimed at the same market.

S&W 22's are much easier to clean than rugers. No idea about the Browning.

My advice is to skip the lowest priced two-tone one. Seems there is a little less fitting and they "might" have more problems. I love mine(it's a two-tone), but I cannot tell if A) I'm just feeding it crap ammo, B) if this is how 22's normally are, or C) my model is a little "off."

But I do recommend the 22a's as good plinkers. This is based on price, ease of use, utility, and enjoyment.

Oh, and I'm linking this at my place, FYI.

I'd be interested to know how that 22A functions when it's clean? I know when we were looking at picking up a few .22 pistols to use with new shooters the S&W22A seemed to be luck of the draw if you got a good one or a problem one. We ended up with a Ruger 22/45 and a Sig Mosquito. I was a little worried about the reviews I had seen about the Sig as well. The only issues with the Sig are it's a little picky about ammo and it needs to be kept clean and properly lubed. The Ruger will shoot anything you feed it, and I let it go a good 1500rnds without cleaning before it started acting up a little.

For *any* .22LR pistol firing bulk ammo, 2% failure rate is pretty darn good IMHO.

When I got the gun it had been shot without being cleaned. I assume it was a couple hundred rounds or so. I did not so much as even wipe it out or even spray a little CLP in the action, and only had two failures to eject.

Lissa's Mosquito worked great - with the high velocity ammo. With standard Federal bulk CP, not so great. The beauty of the 22A is that it ran pretty darn good on cheap ($18/550 rounds) bulk ammo.

I suspect with a clean gun and fresh oil you could get 250+ rounds without incident. Perhaps I'll clean it up and test that out... ;)

The Ruger has had 0% gun related failure rate on all kinds of cheap bulk ammo. I might get 1 or 2 rounds in a brick that are just plain duds that are obviously not the gun's fault. The skeeter hates bulk federal and winchester, but works fine with bulk thunderbolt or federal AM. Go figure.

Like Mopar, I've had zero failures with the MkIII 22/45. I really can't say enough good things about the gun.

Unless it's time to disassemble it. The the air turns blue.
