...why do you mock me???
Linoge is taunting me, tempting me...
You see, there's a wonderful madman out there who is making a bullpup stock for a Mosin-Nagant 91/30. It appeals to me on so many levels - 91/30s are inexpensive, well-built, and produced in numbers that turning one into a sporter won't significantly impact the military collectible market. Since the 91/30 is a bolt-action rifle, it's immune from the Assault Weapons ban, meaning that any stock I put on it won't run me afoul of the law. I don't own anything in a bullpup configuration. And, lastly, it just looks damn cool...
Now, the biggest mental hurdle I have is spending 3X the cost of the rifle on a new wizbang stock...
That is all.

Does that stock require any modifications to the original rifle besides removing the stock? I know there are some mods that can be done, but I don't know if any are required.
I thought about getting brave (stupid?) and getting one of those for an M44 carbine. Just not sure how my eyebrows are going to do being that close to the flamethrower end of a Mosin;)
tweaker
Tempting, but you better buy a LOT of 7.62x54R to go with it before Barack Hussein determines that it is too dangerous for a Peasant, errr CItizen to own, just like the Saiga. Do you know how many BATFEIEIO Agents can be killed with a "Bolt Action Assault Rifle"?!
Chris Byrne had a fabulous rant a few years ago about why the bullpup is a persistently bad design.
I have one, have for a couple years, and have promised repeatedly to take pics for Linoge. Sadly I have failed my brethren by not doing so and I am shamed. That cursed life thing, you know.
No permanent mods are required and it's a quick swap back. I have the CBRPS stocks for my Mosin and SKS, love them both. Pictures as soon as life stops trying to end me..
I'm not really a fan of having a full power battle rifle cartridge going off in a 70 year old Communist produced rifle recently dug up from a field in Kazakhstan that close to my face.
Jay, you hotrodder you. I really don't see the good part of any of this gambit. I realized that it is not worth the time or expense when I started to "sporterize" a Swedish Mauser. I still have the Lyman Sight book that outlined the costs. It wasn't worth it 40 years ago, either.
You knooooow you want it. You knoooow you need it. You knoooow you will have way too much fun with it.
And Lord knows when the next ordering period for the MN is...
The guy who makes these is working on a design for the M44, Speaker, complete with baffles to try to control that blast and maybe even turn it into a compensator...
Thankfully, this particular design bypasses a lot of the shortcomings Chris addressed, Borepatch (mainly through shortcomings in the actual firearm, but that is another matter entirely).
And I would definitely appreciate some pictures, TDC :).
The end goal of this probably-pointless venture, Libertyman, is to take a rifle older than my parents to Boomershoot and see what kind of damage I can do. Who knows... might just work :).
Hm, if this means I will have a "Bolt action assault rifle" that will make japete, Pelosi et:al cry then it's all aces in my book. I should build three.
And there's a gent who has been working on a 10 round "trench" style magazine. Fits right in!

And having been on sick call today, wasted web time hunting for a documented case of a Mosin going "Glock" on someone. Nothing so far after an hour of google-fu. Only a rare incident or two of headspace issues/case ruptures.
Now I need to order another one! Stashed a few Mosins for just such am occasion.
My humble apologies to Linoge and Jay, you are right. It is the doing of it that is the point.
Have fun, and let's see the results!
Exactly libertyman.
I harbor no illusions about this being something useful (which is another reason I'm having trouble convincing myself to come up with the nearly three bills for it).
But it sure looks like fun!
Tell me that wouldn't be a HOOT at the next Northeast Bloggershoot!
