Seriously. Go read. I'm fortunate in that my job has no definitive start or end times, but the Mrs. works in an analogous situation to AD. Her sick/late policy is insanely strict compared to AD's, and you'd be surprised - or not - at how often people get written up or even terminated for calling in sick. They've even got policy in place for folks who call in over a long weekend! Where I am, start and end times are more concepts than actual numbers, and the sick time is one day per quarter - and I still wind up turning in sick time unused at the end of the year.
Is a strong work ethic really a dying breed?
That is all.

I don't think so ... There will always be slackers and absentees, there will always be professionals, and it's usually pretty easy to tell them apart. Which is good news for us professionals :)
My fear of being seen as a slacker at work was such that I once had to be sent home, because I refused to call in. (My boss explained to me that they only had one on-call pilot at the time, besides him, and I could easily Typhoid Mary the whole flight department...)
As a matter of fact, as I was laying in the street after my motorcycle wreck, with my shin bone hanging out, the first thing I told the paramedics was "Call my boss and tell him I'm going to be late."
They were, like, "I don't think you're going to make it in today."

Yes. There are lots of dying breeds.
And quite honestly I feel like a koala in a world devoid of eucalypt.
Being a middle-managment type, I don't have a time-card to punch. Nobady cares if I'm in the office, at home, sick, or on vacation - as long as the work gets done.
I'm free to do it whenever and wherever I want - but I can't get free of the workload itself.
I used to work at a few places,if you punched in 1 minute late, they docked you 1/2 hour...which is illegal, here at least! If we got caught in traffic or such,we'd sit in the parking lot for 1/2 hour to compensate! Of course,90% of the other employee's were illegals,so they never complained...
You want to try working for your family's firm every one thinks youre
earning more than them when you are earning less, dont get paid for overtime or coming in at the weekend
the fact that you are ecpected to be on call 24/7 but dont get paid for it

When I worked in Hollis, they gave us 3 sick days per year. I always used at least 2 of themfor Christmas shut down (it was use or lose - and they preferred we use them).
It's been a long time since I worked set hours - then I always showed up 20-30 minutes early - at e my lunch (2nd shift) and got caught up on what was happening on my own time.
