(CNN) -- Legendary rock saxophonist Clarence Clemons died Saturday of complications from a stroke, bandmate Bruce Springsteen said. He was 69.
Clemons had played sax in Springsteen's E Street Band off and on since 1972.
Lefty politics aside, Bruce Springsteen's music was a major part of growing up in the 1970s and 80s. "Born to Run", "The River", "Born in the USA"; Springsteen had a sound that defined the time period - and Clarence Clemons was an integral part of that sound. His saxophone - borrowed by Aretha Franklin and others - lent a unique sound to what was shaping up to be a decade of synthesizers.
Requiescat in pace, Big Man...
That is all.

I heard. Unfortunate.
Spent the flight to Chicago watching the Hyde Park show on the teeny iPod screen. Glad I saw them a couple years ago, don't think the E St Band will be around again. RIP Big Man.
Yep, that is a big loss... He was a truly gifted musician! RIP Big Man!
