Different (Letter), Different Rules...

Stretch sends in this story from my own backyard:

Deval Patrick’s records under lock & key

You think all those cyber sleuths searching Sarah Palin’s e-mails would get a similar thrill looking at, say, Gov. Deval Patrick’s BlackBerry?

The answer is no, and not just because MSNBC would never mobilize an army of reporters to go after a Democrat. The real reason people will never see Patrick’s e-mails is because they can’t.

Yep. One of the things Cadillac Deval didn't change when he took office was the practice, utilized by Mitt Romney and Paul Cellucci, of exempting the governor's correspondences from FOIA requests. Deval is perfectly content to have his gubernatorial e-mails sealed and left private, unlike Sarah Palin as recent events have borne out.

One wonders what kind of treasures could be found in Patrick's inbox. Perhaps he discussed which luxury car to buy when he was elected - we could find out once and for all if he settled on a Cadillac after being told that the people of MA wouldn't stand for a Rolls Royce. We could find out who he contacted in the nationwide search to be his wife's chief of staff - six figure jobs being hard to come by these days of belt-tightening and all. And maybe we'd find out once and for all if there was any truth to the rumor that Deval had originally requested the sales tax be raised to eleven...

But we won't find this out, because Deval is adhering to Barack Øbama's definition of "transparent" - we have to see everything you do so we can operate in private...

That is all.

Come on, Jay, I've listened to VC, I know you're a Pratchett guy. You should remember that Transparent has two meanings, it can either be completely clear and open, or mean almost impossible to see.
:-D

To be fair, Gov. Palin's e-mails were made public only long after she'd left office. (I can see some sense in that. I want to know what my elected officials are doing, in general -- but to read ALL of their e-mails in real time? I wouldn't want my boss reading over my shoulder; I can understand Governor Erkel feeling the same way.)

So riddle me this: did Patrick learn about sealing all his records from Obama, or the other way around?
