Songs For The Road...

My #1 Blogson is missin' home something fierce.

He's got a video posted about a dad away from his family who misses them very much, and it got me to thinkin' about road songs. Not so much driving tunes, although the two are certainly closely related, but songs you associate with the road. I guess the main difference is that a driving song makes your heart beat faster and your foot get heavier; a road song, when you hear it, makes you long to be on the open road.

I already posted one of my favorites in comments, George Thorogood's "Six Days on the Road" - what's your favorite song for the road?

That is all.

Heh. Tim, one of my very favorites is "East Bound & Down" by Jerry Reed, made famous in "Smokey & The Bandit"...

Jay_G, I was trying to limit the amount of country music in my list. There is just so much country music that lends itself to road trip music, it isn't even funny.

'Carefree Highway' - Gordon Lightfoot.
He was leaving Phoenix, heading north in his tour bus, and saw THAT exit sign.
A song about being on the road, written whilst being on the road.

Agree with Tim - there are a million Country songs here.

So here's one from Queensrÿche (Another Rainy Night Without You).

Of course, that's music for all you young pups .... ;-)

Where do I start? It is a fine line between songs to drive to and songs to drive a lot faster to. Under the former I would list:
-Devil Went Down to Georgia by Charlie Daniels
-Kentucky Rain by Elvis
-The Ride by David Allan Coe
-Jungleland by Bruce Springsteen
-Church on Cumberland Road by Shanandoah
-No End to This Road by Restless Heart
-Against the Wind by Bob Seeger
-Highwayman by The Highwaymen
-Twilight Zone by Golden Earring

Songs that can get me a ticket are Radar Love by Golden Earring and Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen. Watch out if those songs come on my radio.

When I'm driving to NY to get on my boat, I've always got my playlist:

Rocket Man- Elton John
Gimme Shelter- The Rolling Stones
Pull Me Under- Dream Theatre
Wasted Years- Iron Maiden
The Mary Ellen Carter- Stan Rogers
The Hills of Connemara- Carbonleaf

And if I want to push triple digits, 'Painkiller' by Judas Priest.

Come Monday
Fins
Highway Star
Radar Love

And when there's an open road, and I really want to work out all 8 of the War Machine's cylinders, I flip the ipod to George Thorogood's "Gear Jammer" and the miles just fly on by.

Sacred Ground by Craig Chaquico alsways makes me long for the road. Not a hard driving song, one for just being one with the road.
