Friday Auto WTF...

Saw this in the parking lot of the hotel yesterday

Yep. That's a Subaru Baja, an automotive "duh" in its own right - hmm, let's take a moderately successfully idea and make it far less useful! The whole appeal of the Outback was that it was a medium sized station wagon that was good in inclement weather. You could haul groceries in the winter, all the beach gear in the summer, and still get reasonable gas mileage. Then they hacked the back off and called it the "Baja" - removing the usefulness of the wagon and adding a completely useless "bed" that served no purpose other than to generate nostalgia for the Brat...

So this guy buys one and then puts a cap on it. It's no longer even useful for the tiny, marginal bit that the bed adds (oversized items), *and* the cargo area is separate from the interior. Unless the owner has a specialized gig hauling stuff that needs to be separate from the driver - and needs good gas mileage and not a lot of hauling capability weight-wise, I can't even begin to fathom the purpose of this monstrosity.

But then again, some people claim that beans do not belong in chili, so there's exceptions to the rule everywhere...

That is all.

I think you want one bad.

(No beans, dammit!)

"some people claim that beans do not belong in chili"

The difference, of course, being that those people are right, whereas this guy is obviously nuts.

I can imagine a few scenarios in which this vehicle would be useful. But even in those scenarios, there are already more suitable vehicles available for the same task.

Much like the Hitler/Nazi Godwin's Law, I would like North's Law to be that if a post about ANY topic also mentions chili with beans and chili without beans, the majority of the comments will not be about the topic, but instead be voiced opinions on chili bean inclusion.

Hold on there! You some sort of Anti-Baja Liberal? Then you complain when he puts a Cap on it? "Why would someone need to put a Cap on a Baja?" For the same reason one "Needs" to have a Magazine with more that Ten Rounds in it! It's his Property, and he can do what ever he wants to with it!

Of course, the idiot who owns the Stupid Baja with the Silly Cap on it probably leaves the Beans OUT of the Chili as he throws his Backpack into the Vehicle and wastes Gasoline so he can walk a Tax Payer Funded Hiking Trail and tell himself how Cool and Green he is while he eats his Chili w/o Beans.

Us Libra's get to see BOTH sides of the issue, you know. ; )

If you put beans in it, it's not chili.

If you don't put beans in it, its meat sauce.

The bigger question is why is there such a demand for Baja Camper tops. Enough people must be buying them for them to take the time to manufacture them. That's the real scary part is that there is enough demand.

That and what the hell are you talking about beans in you chili!!!

Agree on the "car". Now, let's discuss the credibility of one who is MArooned even commenting on how to make chili. You guys name cities after beans, of course you'd want to blaspheme a southwestern favorite with them.

+1 for Anonymous.
There is a reason that chili with meat is called chili con carne by the countries that invented it. Original chili had no meat at all!

It was poor folk food. They couldn't afford expensive things like meat for every meal. They would flavor it with drippings (grease) saved from the one or two meals a week which had meat in them or just throw together whatever vegetables they could find, chiles and peppers were cheap and could be grown most of the year. It also often contained corn with the beans.

Therefore Texas chili is the rich folk's version of the original dish. Much like salads made with arugala.

(Note: word verification was "flang", which always reminds me of RAH's Lazarus Long character saying something like "Just leave the water under the bridge where Jesus flang it." I have no idea what that means but it still tickles me.)

Remember when it was "Chili con carne"?

Some people like to pretend the past never happened.

They are useful for hauling wet dogs around. Subaru is the best selling car in Montana, so we have more than a few of these with caps on them. Most people seem to use them to haul dogs around. And the occasional deer carcass.

I'm with you Jay, no beans, not chili.

I know how to settle the chili debate..........

Glock or 1911? :)

I am not a fan of the Subaru Baja, but a cargo cover or cap would allow you to use the "swtichback" feature in inclimate weather.

What is the "switchaback" feature you say? Well a picture is worth a thousand words.

Carne con Chile Colorado: stewmeat, powdered chilies (not chili powder!), comino, tomato sauce or beef broth for the liquid. Quick boil the meat then drain it, return to pot and add other ingredients. Cook until done, adding liquid if necessary (usually 2-4 hours depending on stove heat and altitude). Serve with tortillas, beans on the side if desired, and white cheese and/or diced tomatoes if you are having company and what to show off.

I'm assuming the cap is removable, so if you really need to haul that bigger item, you can. And having a cap on it does help aerodynamics, so a little better gas mileage when driving on the highway.

And put me down on the beans side.

I can eat Good chili whether it has beans or not.

Bad chili (cough Cincinati cough) I wouldn't bother with

I'm thinking the enclosed back is where you put your passenger after they've eaten REAL (with beans) chili. The reasons why should be obvious. ;)

Eh, I can see the point of the Baja. For a suburbanite who just needs to haul a few flats of plants or a half-dozen bags of mulch on the weekend, it's a useful vehicle - and gets much better mileage than a Real Truck.

Doesn't change the fact that it's butt-ugly.

They were probably already building thousands of them for Australia and decided the Americans might like 'em.

BEANS 4 EVS!

Hell, I like the idea. It gives you an enclosed cargo box that you don't mind getting filthy.

I don't have much of an opinion of beans in chili. Either can be tasty, or crap.
