Friday Gun Pr0n #229

Numerically speaking, I should post a picture of the P229 I used to own. However, I promised earlier that I'd reveal the new T&E gun, so I have to honor that. Fortunately, it's in the same family:

Skeeter!

SIG SAUER Mosquito, .22LR semi-automatic DA/SA hammer-fired full(ish) sized pistol. It's 90% the size of a P226, and keeps (mostly) the same controls - decocker, slide release, and takedown lever. It differs from the P226 in more than just size - there's an ambidextrous safety, and the barrel is fixed rather than floating. There's even an accessory rail for lights, lasers, or bayonets...

When I picked it up at my FFL, two of the guys working behind the counter mentioned that they owned Mosquitoes. One had had to send his back to Sig for some work before it ran right; the other handed it to the Sig Armorer on site who buffed and tweaked it a bit before even trying it out. Both ran fine after tweaking; I know that Lissa loves hers.

In any case, I'll run a few hundred rounds of CCI mini-mags (recommended) through her and report back sometime later in the fall...

That is all.

TCA would probably want the bayonet attachment :)

Cher loves hers as well. Is this the "new generation" that was promised when we were at Sig Academy? If you remember, under questioning by Cheryl, they said they were going to be making some changes to better accommodate common American rimfire ammo.

If this is like the one in our safe, there is a little hole in the slide that gets a drop of oil every few hundred rounds. It wasnt mentioned in the owners manual, just on a little slip of paper that came in the box. Didn't notice it until AFTER the first range trip, and it made a huge difference. That and the rest of the gun likes to run really "wet", we use the Sig reccomended Mil-Comm TW25B lube. A bit expensive, but a little goes a long way.

Jay,

Any time you want to run your new Skeeter up against Cherry, say the word. I'm sure it would make for a fun afternoon.

I went to a SIGnificant dealer when looking at .22LR pistols. They actually warned me off the mosquito because A - they had so many come back and B - it's a jam queen with anything other then match ammo. I certainly didn't buy a .22 to have to buy expensive ammo! Good luck with yours, let us know how it does with the cheaper stuff too!

Mama,

Heh. I debated over putting up that pic vs. one with the pistol bayonet attached. The "standard" pic won - for now...

Mopar,

I'm not sure; I'll check when I get home as to whether it's got the lube hole (boy, that sounds dirty...).

Brad,

I think that might be arranged. I need to put a whole bunch of rounds through this, so I'll be looking for multiple range trips in the future. The great part is that where it's a 22 I can shoot it at the indoor range any time...

Adam,

Abso-freakin'-lutely. IMHO, a rimfire gun is pretty much useless if the ammo you have to feed it is only marginally less expensive than the centerfire variant.

In this case, it's getting close - the CCI mini-mags were $8/100 rounds; I can get 9mm for $9.50/50 rounds, so it's almost half the price of centerfire.

It will be tested with several different brands of high velocity .22LR ammo, including bulk, once the break-in period has been achieved...

Dude, that's harsh. Do you test guns on all your friends?

Jay, the oil hole (and the 2 different recoil springs) seems to represent a stopgap measure. Cher's is several years old and has it. Older ones then that don't seem to. The guy at Sig when we were all there in January acknowledged the problem with cheaper ammo at the time. He explained it something like this: In Switzerland/Germany/Europe where Sig hails from, there really is no such thing as bulk pack plinking ammo. The gun was designed to function with the ammo commonly available there (what we would consider match grade). They are aware of the problem with American ammo and planned on some design changes to fix that. I think the only way to know if they have made those changes would be to check with your contact at Sig. I really do like the gun; we use it mostly for new shooters. It's perfect since it has the look and feel of a modern centerfire pistol. It's 100% reliable using CCI mini-mags, but if it ate Federal bulk pack it would make a fun plinking gun and not just a trainer.
