Larry Has Ruined Me...

Whilst ruminating over today's posts last night, the Mrs. had MTV's execrable "Teen Wolf" on the TV. Now, teen-angst-ridden bodice ripping BS aside, I kept listening to the horrible show, cringing at the stilted dialogue and clichés rammed home with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. And it hit me: I was waiting for one of the Monster Hunter crew to come on the scene and dispatch of the whiny teenaged werewolves with a sintered silver .45 ACP round.

Curse you Larry Correia! You've added yet another reason to hate these insipid shows - the fact that they could be vastly improved by having Owen Pitt come on scene and lay waste to the scene-chewing eye candy. Owen, Julie, and company would so thoroughly own these werewolves, the big problem would be that the series would be half an hour long.

And I won't even get into the whole "Twilight" silliness...

In all seriousness, I just finished Monster Hunter: Alpha. It's a Larry Correia "Monster Hunter" series, so you know it kicks some serious monster ass, but this one is different. Rather than focus on the teams, it centers around Earl Harbinger, who is just such a badass of epic proportions that he is approaching meek from the back side. There's less of an emphasis on gear and armaments (wah) but more back story on Earl (yay) - and there is a seriously epic use of industrial snow removal equipment...

Monster Hunter: Alpha is an excellent read, lives up to the excellent Monster Hunter vintage, and kicks ass in all the right places. Read it today!

That is all.

I suggest you don't watch "True Blood" on, I think, HBO.

It's like Twilight only, what's the word?, freaking stupid. (Freakinger stupider?)

The whole world knows about vampires, they apparently live in this one town.

I saw one episode where some witches (spell makers? who cares?) were trying to kill all vampires and for some reason, I think I was supposed to be against this. Not sure why.

Just because they had a hot redhead vampire (who didn't take her clothes off) and another hot blond one (she did) doesn't mean I'm gonna like the undead.
I did like the werewolf pack (there wolf), but then, I'm a dog person.

I also like how you break up with a vampire chick, you just rescind your invitation into your house and she's flung from the house.

That made what would have been at least a 2 hour, pain in the neck, whinefest into 10 seconds of hilarity as she was thrown out of the house looking all pissed off.

I give it a negative 3 stars, they owe me an hour of my life back.

I'm still waiting to read MHA. We only have 3 copies of it. His and her personally autographed ones, and a plain "to read" copy. Since I got to go first on the last MH book, I have to wait for Cher to finish this one before I can read it. Damnit. At least when I went first I was uhm "nice enough" to read the whole book in a weekend. I did have to skip all that silly time-consuming bathing, dressing and eating stuff, but it was worth it.

Oh, and when you titled this post "Larry Has Ruined Me...", I thought it was gonna be more along the lines of MrsG calling you Owen in bed all the time. I hate when that happens. Damnit.

Of course, those of us who use Baen Books websubscription.net finished it several weeks ago. ; )

Yup. In one sitting. Started at around 6pm after work, and finished around 3am. Then I had to work the next day, but it was worth it.

Also, Jay, IIRC it's the MCB that uses sintered silver - MHI uses JHP rounds with a silver ball in the tip. :P

It's on Webscription? Sweet!

Jay, thanks for giving me this final push. I've been hearing good things about Larry's work for a long time, but today I'm finally buying in.

Yup! And last night I saw they have the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of the second Grimnoir Chronicles book, too!

Now I just need some money, dangit!

Haven't read Alpha yet but the "industrial equipment" comment reminded me of something.

I have often thought the key state agency in the fight against zombies won't be the National Guard, it'll be DOT, especially in the Northern states.

Lure the Zeds to a highway and use a couple graders to force them into the blades of a snowplow truck.

For Southern states do the same but with the hydro axes they use for trimming the rights of way. With the arm mounted ones you could even mince the walking dead on the road shoulders.

You wouldn't even have to change the union contracts. The mandatory break times would allow for the luring of more Zeds.

Fandom takes many forms.
Some order patches.
Others stand in line for autographs.
Me? I'm clearly in need of a major intervention.
Yup, it's mine.

Ah yes, the Larry Correia "Snowblower From Hell XXXL (tm)".

Loved the book, as well as the others. Just got it on sale at Borders...

Don't do it, Dave H!!! There's something about Larry's writing that screws up your sleep patterns... you don't want to take time out for trivial little stuff like, SLEEP, until you finish the book!! And then you're sitting there whining for MORE of his stuff.

I tell you, it's paperback crack!!

Ross: thanks, but this isn't my first time to the rodeo. I was up until 2:00 this morning trying to finish a "Doc" Smith book so I can get on to the Monster Hunter books.

"Doc" Smith is OLD SCHOOL sci-fi.
I remember when they re-released his Lensman and IPC series in the '60s. Over the years I've picked up 2 autographed hardback copes of his works. Makes me wonder how such items found their way to a used book store.

My PSA for the day:

Several of Doc Smith's books are available as free e-books on Project Gutenburg.

Enjoy!

Jake: Actually, that's where I got it. I have about 4 times as much free material on my e-reader as paid stuff. I just wish I could get some of Jeff Cooper's books electronically.

Stretch: I'm an incorrigible fan of space opera, and the arms race in the Lensman series is impressive for its imagination, if not its practicality.

I wonder what a DeLameter woupld do to a werewolf?

Stretch said...

Damn you Jake! I've been fighting the e-reader urge. You've presented damn good argument there.

Dave H.: Smith's description of the WWI battlefield is still one of the best in fiction. And his classic swashbuckler with ray guns never grows old. OK, maybe a bit campy but the good vs. evil theme is always reliant.

"Love what you've done with the place. Very industrial."

I laughed my ASS off*.

Always glad to help! :D

Gutenburg is a good place to find plenty of out of print titles, along with the usual free (because the copyright expired) titles.

Baen's free library is another good place for some free sci-fi ebooks. It's usually the first one (or sometimes two) in a series, since the idea is to get you hooked on authors you might not otherwise try, but that's understandable. Unlike Gutenburg, Baen is in it for the money and understands the idea that giving away one can sell them 3 or four that wouldn't have sold without that free one being available.

Also, they do put out the ARC versions to draw people in. An ARC usually costs about $15, but you're paying the premium to read it before it's officially released.

Another nice thing about the titles Baen sells electronically is they're not saddled with DRM, and you can re-download them any time - even titles they no longer sell.

They also offer a lot of differnet formats including MOBI (Kindle compatible), ePub (Nook), Sony, RTF, HTML, and others.
