MArooned Product Review: Genuine Gear Tactical Pants

A while back, I mentioned getting a pair of GenuineGear Lightweight Tactical pants for review.

I've had some time to wear (and wash) the pants a few times; they've held up to a good half-dozen times through the washer so far. These pants have an advantage over the other tactical pants in the G. wardrobe in that they are warm water wash rather than cold; this means they can go in with the jeans and T-shirts that are my weekend staple. Other pants are cold water wash, meaning that they get washed in a big ol' tactical clothes wash, leading to humorous items found in the bottom of the washing machine (and woe betide me if the Mrs. comes across a random .45 ACP round at the bottom of the washer...)

The pants are comfortable and lightweight; excellent for summertime wear. There's a pocket on the left side that's perfect for a cell phone, leaving the right pocket available for pocket carry if desired. Both front pockets are reinforced at the front of the opening where a pocket knife or multi-tool would be clipped, a nice touch that we've come to expect in our tactical wear. Rear pockets are roomy and held firmly closed with generous velcro closures, a welcome extra bit of security.

The one quibble I have with these pants is in the cargo pockets. They're dual-use, in that there's an open part as well as a covered part; in theory it's to allow rapid access to items like rifle magazines or shooting gloves while still maintaining a closed cargo pocket. Unfortunately, it means that the main pocket is open with no closure while the front covered pocket really can't carry anything of any weight, lest it continually fall forward (and then be smacked back into the knee when walking). It's a good concept, and if I were taking a carbine class where having rapid access to 30-round magazines was desirable these would be the pants I wore; however I normally carry my pocket knife in the cargo pocket, and that doesn't work with these pants.

Overall, they're good, sturdy pants for the price point. They've got plenty of pockets, lots of storage, reinforced seams, and sturdy closures. They're wearing well, enduring about six months of washing in a couple of months (for testing purposes, of course) and still looking as new. If you need a pair of pants that have large open pockets, these will be perfect; if not, they're perfectly usable as is. I'd rate them as on a par with the LA Police Gear tactical pants I reviewed last year.

One last thing: Tactical Gear News, who provided me with these pants for review, is having a contest!
With the Name Those Tactical Pants! contest, Tactical Gear News and Magnum Boots USA are putting your knowledge to the test. Give that grey matter a good workout and see if you can identify some of the industry’s biggest tactical pants manufacturers. If you answer correctly, you could win a pair of Magnum‘s RD pants.
Go give it a try - I will admit to being completely baffled myself; guess I'm not as tactical as I thought!

That is all.

So are these "humorous items" tactical equipment that you're testing for water resistance? Or is that just what you tell MrsG to save face? (grin)
